Super SERT, What is it ??

This is a basic overview of the new Super SERT. All of what I am going to show you can be found in the 66 page manual that comes with the Super SERT. This a "Down and Dirty" how to get around in the Super SERT without reading the manual. It is not intended to replace the manual. It is not intended to teach you how to tune using the Super SERT.

As with any change come likes and dis-likes. Here are some things I noticed.

Likes:
1. Ability to view and edit more than one table at a time and then save as a new map.
2. Easier to save the file revisions as -001,-002 etc.
3. The CAL notes display when opening the file.
4. Ease of access to previous versions of a Map or the Original Map.
5. Descriptions of table selections and adjustments below the table "tree".

Dis-likes:
1. The units of adjustment are too spread out, for example you can choose .5%, 2.5% or 5% VE as a unit of increment. I want to be able to use 1% but it is not a selection. .5 is too little and 2.5 is too much.
2. The interface is not standard and less intuitive. It could have used a more conventional interface that allows you to make it a window. Instead you have 2 choices, Full screen or minimized on the bar, nothing in between.
3. The large icons are somewhat child like and a waste of desktop space, a regular menu would allow more desktop to be used for Map and graph function that are more helpful.
4. The data mode is considerably more "clunky" feeling. To save a recorded run is confusing and it is easy to lose the run because you didn't save it properly. The old Data mode prompted you making it less likely to accidentally lose a run.
5. The Data chart is harder to manipulate. You can zoom in on an area but it is hard to figure out how to get back to a normal screen.
6. Opening up a recorded data chart is SLOW, you better have a fast PC.
7. The install is more technical. The requirements are XP service Pack 2 or Vista. Also need to have .NET installed and service packed. While many systems may already be at this level, gone are the days of using an old PC laying around for your SERT.
8. Because the Super SERT Key is USB now it also requires installing drivers for the Key. Not a big problem but not as user friendly for the "computer challenged" individual.

When you first open the Super SERT, hereon refereed to as the "SERT", you have to to "Accept" the terms. Once past that screen you will see the interface as shown below.

Arrow number 1 points to the "Flash" button. It is used to "Flash" the ECM. I point it out here because it has a fence pattern on it. That fence pattern mean that button isn't available to you. Anytime you see a fence over the button, you can't use it. Note down in the lower left corner there is a little bike icon and is has a yellow line coming out of it to the SERT Key. That yellow line has a red line breaking it. This indicates that SERT key is not connected or the bike isn't on. When the red line goes away, the SERT program is communicating with the Bike. When it is communicating the "Flash" button becomes available and the fence goes away.

2. This is the SETUP button and a good place to start.

3. Once in the SETUP, change the Vacuum to "kPa", arrow #3

4. This 4 way arrow icon is "Tuning Options". Once in that screen we can change to Advanced mode.

5. Use the drop down and select "Advanced" mode

6. Now click on the "Tuning" fork (???) to enter tuning mode in the SERT

7. A window will pop up with nothing in it, not very intuitive, click on the "Manually Select File" button.

8. Depending on what you are tuning select the appropriate folder by Double Clicking it, in this case "Big Twin". You will then have to select your year by double clicking it as well.

9. Shows what years we are in.

10. Select a Map that you will start with. Check the Calibration Description PDF file to pick one close OR you can click on the Map file and wait a second.

11. After you click on the Map file it will give you a description of the selected Map for review.

Click OPEN to open the selected Map in the SERT

Once the file is open, the advanced "Tree" will show up on the left.
This shows all the table selections available as well as the information about the current Map.
Note the ECM Part number are listed. If there is any problem loading a Map, check that the part numbers of the Map match your actual ECM part number.

12. To begin working with a table click the "+" sign beside the table you want to work with.

13. Then with your left mouse button click and hold the table. In this case the AFR working table is selected. Now drag the selection to one of the windows on the right and let go of the left mouse button.

14. Now you can choose how to display the table. For now click "Display as grid".

The table will open and should look like this. Note that under the Advanced Tree there is a window that displays information about what is selected in the Tree.

Place your mouse on any of the window frames and you can resize them. All the windows are resize-able and make it easy to view multiple graphs.

Grab a VE table and drop it into a window and size the windows accordingly.

15. Select any value or values on the table.

16. The values can then be changed using the "Decrease" or "Increase" buttons.

17. The amount the values will change is based on this selection. Note, it would have been nice to have more selections to choose from, in particular 1%.

18. Once the changes are made. or before, drag and drop the same VE working table to another window and select "Display as graph"

Once the graph is displayed you can click on it and move it all around as in the next 2 pictures.

19. After the changes have been made and you want to save them, drag and drop the "Calibration Revision Number" to a window.

20. Now change the number from 000 to 001 to indicate it is the first change. and then click the save button beside it.

21. To save the Map and all the changes now click the "Save As..." button in the upper right under the "Exit" icon.

It will default the save to the same location as the original Map. You can choose another location to keep them organized if you want. Note the new map now contains the revision number and will Not overwrite your original Map.

22. The engine constants are found in the "Tuning" part of the tree. Here you can turn on and off the Temperature Management, Knock Control and Automatic compression releases. This is also where the Rev Limit, injector size and engine displacement can be set.

The Buttons are as follows.

1. Toolbox, gives access to data mode
2. Tuning Mode
3. Print
4. Reflash for programing the ECM
5. Brings you back the main menu
6. Setup for accessing Advanced mode
7. Help
8. Minimize window
9. EXIT program
10. Data Mode
11. Record VCI data, allows SERT Key to record data on a ride
12. Diagnostic Trouble Codes
13. System information read from the ECM, like CAL number, VIN etc.
14. As mentioned above, shows connection status to ECM

There is obviously a lot more to it but this should give anyone the basics required to get around in the software. using some of the more advanced features are described in the manual and in the help file. Both are worth reading.

I will post more on programing the ECM later.

Great info ... and going through it once again makes me realize that when I eventually do get a fuel injected bike, I will pay someone to tune it.

When you purchase the SERT it comes with the program CD. If you purchased it, you should get it regardless of who does the tuning. They can install it and tune your bike if they don't have a copy already but you should get the CD back with SERT Key when they are done.

The New SERT now updates on-line. This certainly makes it easier to keep it up to date .... or does it?

It can be tricky to get it to work if you are not all that computer savvy. What I found is the Windows Firewall can interfere with it downloading. In order to get it to work, at least for me, I had to disable the Windows Firewall.

How to disable the firewall if the Update doesn't work for you.

On the desktop, Right Click "My Computer" and then select "Manage", the window shown below will pop up.

1. At the bottom you will see "Services and Applications", click on the "+" beside it.

2. Now click on "Services"

3. Now click on the "Standard" tab on the bottom of the window.

Now scroll through the list to the bottom and double click on "Windows Firewall ..."

A new window will pop up. Here is where we need to disable the firewall. Int he window you will see something like the picture below.

4. Click on the drop down arrow.

5. Select "Disable"

6. Now click the "Stop" button. When the service stop, click "OK" then close the Services window. Now the Windows Firewall is disabled.

Open up the SERT.

7. Click the "SETUP" icon

8. Click "Software Information" icon

9. Click the "Check for Updates" button on the bottom.

10. Check the box for "Download & Install"

11. Now click the button "Download Install"

After a minute or so this screen should come up indicating the update is downloading.

It should start the install after it downloads it. It will come up with an error message that says the update client and SERT need to be closed. At this point close the update window and then exit the SERT program. Now click the "OK" button on the error window and the install will continue.

The update screen should now come up, hit the update button. This should only take a short time to complete.

Great info, thanx springer.
Do we need to purchase a new interface module(Back Box), or can the software be used with previous SERT versions, just as a software update?
