Do the '06 V-Rods use a different oil filter?

We changed the oil in my friends Night Rod this evening. I went to the Wix website and found that Wix recommended a 51348 for the '02 V-Rod. I didn't think anything would have changed. But the 51348 did not fit. The can and rubber gasket was the right size, but the threaded part was a little too small--it wouldn't screw on.

Then I went to another website...

this one...

This site seemed to indicate that all V-Rods used the same oil filter, and it gave a list of filters that would work. We tried two of them--the Napa 1358 and the SuperTech (Walmart) ST-7317. Both of these had the right threads, but the can diameter was too small; the gasket wouldn't have sealed up correctly.

I can't figure what's going on here. The original filter off the bike (I don't have a part number off of it as I type this) looks to be about the same thing as the Premium filter that HD sells for the Twin Cam engines. That has me wondering if they have changed the filter model for the 2006 V-Rod.

Yeah, yeah, yeah I hear ya. Go to the stealer and give 'em ten bucks for a two dollar filter. Only as a last resort. I'm sure there is a good Wix filter out there that will do the job. I just don't know what part number that would be...

JMS,

Thanks. Just got off the phone with Wix and they said that thier website has an error, and that they do not make a filter which will work on the '06 V-Rod. I wish they'd have cleared that up before we bought the filter...

I appreciate your time. We may end up having to spring for the HD part. The black one isn't really so expensive. I just figured that if there was a comparable filter made by Wix or Purolator or Champion (Champion makes the HD filters) we could probably cut the cost in half and have the same quality.
