False Neutrals

Have a 2003 VRSA that I have had no trouble with until lately. On two occassions the transmission will not down shift or up shift but instead moves into a false neutral. The only way to get the gear I'm trying for is to move the shift peddle backward or forward and retry the shift.

Anyone have any ideas were to start.

Check for binding in the shift linkage first. Then maybe try synth oil. Or, it could be something inside. Does it only do it at slow spped or all speeds?

No binding at all, and it occurs at all speeds. The only thing that will allows me to up or down shift is to move the shift peddle back and forth. I am running 100% synthetic.

It sounds internal then. I would have a stealer look at it.

Your transmission may be bad, mine went out at 500 miles like that, the engine was replaced. Don't ride it anymore, there is a chance the trans could lock up.

Sounds like it's inside the box. If it's in warranty, let the dealer have it.

I have to admit, I didn't understand that. Your tran went out an' the engine was replaced ? I know I've got this wrong

There was a TSB on that the hd was swapping engines as they did not want the dealship fixing it. I did several that would do that. HD has you inspect the linkage (internal) if there is any movement aone one part that they specify they have you pull the motor and swap it out.
