Stalling problem when downshifting to 1st Gear

I have a new "03 V-Rod. After I rode it 2 miles, the speedometer went out. When I was riding back to the dealer to get the speedometer fixed, I noticed that the bike stalled when I was downshifting into the lower gears when stopping for a red light. This happened twice on my way to the dealer.

Once I got to the dealer, I mentioned this problem. After the technicians were through ordering the sensor for the speedometer, they told me that they could not get a code regarding the stalling problem, and advised me to just ride the bike for now and see if this problem happens again. Well, on my way home, it did happen again.

This bike was made on 7-23-03, so I'm hoping that it does not have any defective parts that were recalled on earlier V-Rods. I've only had the bike since 01-23-04 and have not had the chance to put many miles on it. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this bike to stall when downshifting?

Thanks for your help/input.

The stalling problem has been a common problem with some V Rods. Supposedly there is a new download for the bike's module. Talk to your dealer to ensure you have the correct download. Also, make sure your bike has had the fuel module flange recall fixed. Your dealer would be able to tell that as well. If your service department looks at you like you're nuts, then go somewhere else. These are all well known issues with the V Rod.

Thanks for the advice. I'll follow up on it.

Stalling

paneomaha,
Both my wifes' bike and mine have the same problem. ( Stalling with clutch in and coming to a stop ) Dealer said it should be fixed with the flange recall. We will see. Just got the bikes back Friday night, so we really didn't have any time to ride them yet. Will get back to you after we get some miles on them.

Thanks for your reply, Doug. I hope replacing the flange solves this problem for our bikes.

Stalling problem solution

I had this same problem after bringing my bike to the shop for some maintenance. the issue was after they performed the work the cracked the air box. They had to replace the air box for the problem to go away.
