Question Has anyone had this power problem?

Has anyone had this problem?

Occaisionally (it has happened 5 times), upon hard acceleration in 1st or 2nd gear, I experience a complete loss of power for a split second (1/2 second) around the 6000 to 7000 RPM area. It feels like hitting the rev limiter but 2000 rpm sooner.....then it clears and the bike continues. Could it be clogged injectors, the fuel flange recall issue (my bike is not on the VIN list), a need to re-program the Powercommander, bad gas, what???

I am running Vance and Hines exahust and PC3+. I had no problems the first 2500 miles with this setup. Bike currently has 4000 total miles. It was very scary to experience this in the middle of passing 18 wheeler on a curvey 2 lane mountain road with oncomming traffic...PLEASE HELP.

Thanks

My first question would be did it just start, how long.

A quick check to see if it is a flange problem would be to remove the gas cap while the motor is running and see if there is fuel being spewn across the top. (Flange fitting is loose.)

At first blush it would sound like a flat spot associated with the map... are you sure you haven't changed the configuration.... topless????

First thing I would check is the flange.

I know what you mean.... juicing the the throttle and all of a sudden it just dies and drops... not a good feeling. In my case it was the flange fitting.

Was engine Cold? Remember reading that the engine rev limiter (or action similar) may kick in at lower RPM's until it is up to Temp.

My bike is NOT on the recall list for the flange....dealer is checking it now

Yeah, I caught that on your first post CR, but fittings do come loose and just because your not on the recall doesn't mean your bike doesn't have the problem. Please let us know what plays out.

Lightbulb Don't try this at home!

I would check the fault codes first as Kaz says, do this with any problem always. The flange problem is not easily reproduced at any fixed RPM level or gear selection. It can happen at lower RPM levels and I did notice it worst on part throttle situations. It actually stopped sputtering when wide open (lower AFR's and higher VE's on this situations I guess).

Everyone try this once . On many occasions, all too frequent with the V-Rod, it just does not bother me, you'll find yourself very low on gas. If you crack it wide open in first or second you may notice this cutoff effect. Only at peak hp & tq rpms on low gears when G's are best (pulling hard). I know about all the EFI system components and this should not happen but when I had your same problem I did reproduce it three or four times and it dissapeared after a fillup (yesss, I did not care if it leaned and broke, in the name of science, but it wasn't gonna, I swear ). When this happened I still had not replaced the damn flange flop thing but it was before the letter and the bike had no symptoms whatsoever. It was several month later that it started with the sputtering and the dealer war.

Experiment finished so I never tried it again. You shouldn't either unless you have a lot of money and/or another bike. I have other bikes but love my V-Rod. Not the fastest by any means but surely the best. Just think back and see if you were low on gas. I'm not saying it HAD TO BE what I'm suggesting (cause I know nothing), just a plausible explanation given what happened and what corrected it.

vrod power loss pp8 update

there is a 'product update' different from a recall. certain 02-03 fuel pumps can be replaced at dealer at no charge. bring bike to dealer (date code on top of fuel tank) and ask about pp8 update
