my mistake...

I picked up a set of braided throttle cables a while ago. When i went to install them i snaked them in past the battery and just touched the positive terminal.Blew achunk out of the cable end ! The next time around placed a piece of thick masking tape over the terminal and everything went well. Live and learn. Disconnecting battery negative terminal is not enough. I hope th
is helps someone else and saves some aggravation

Question

Pete Kane -

Just installed the braded set of cables this weekend, too late for your tip, but fortunately I missed the positive terminal - so no incident there.

The question for you is regarding that black plastic cable guide (the one with the double looping zip tie). I placed the "guide" at the top end of the brake line (as shown in the instructions, not on the braided section of the line itself but the crimped end near just above its termination near the brake fluid reservior) however, it seems that it puts a slight bend in the cables. There is no binding in the the cables - no stickiness in the throttle response, but it just looks like a half a$$ed design.

I can post a photo of the end result if this write-up is unclear. I was just looking for confirmation that this really is how it is supposed to look when all finished.

Thanks in advance,

Scooter_D

First time attempting to attach photos: first one is looking from the front towards the rear wheel, the second was shot from the airbox cover. The "bend" in question is where the cables are leaving the adjustment barrels.

I guess I'm at a loss, if you did disconnect the negative cable how you still shorted out? Do you have another power source or the siren with a battery?

Max all i can assume is the top end of the cable grounded to a bolt or the bars. It happened quick. I was more concerned that nobody saw that bonehead move. I was real surprised how deep it burned thru the cable. Live and learn i guess

Pete - can you confirm that when you were done with the install, it looked similar to those photos?

Scooter, I just went out to the garage to look. the round plastic sleeve is in the wrong place. it goes a few inches lower at the other spot (where braid meets crimp) this area is just below top tripple tree. iwould post a photo but don,t know how . I am kind of new with this computer stuff.

Pete -

Thanks - that is the only other option really, same crimped connector, other end of the cable... figures, thought that bend looked strange. Well, nothing a new zip-tie won't cure. Plus with it kind of hidden behind the tripple tree, the appearance will be much cleaner.

Thanks for the feedback, no one up here has done the mod yet (that I have seen) for comparison.

Ride safe.

BTW- for posting the images... use the "additional option" of "attach files" down near the bottom of the reply screen. It took me a few attempts but it finally worked. Thanks again!
