harley 28 tooth kit

my brother bought the harley 28 tooth sproket kit and i say dont.you have to have a 39 mm socket cut down a little to get the nut off the end of the trans shaft.then you have to figure out how to hold the flange to loosen the nut and then you have to pull the flange off the shaft.steves only takes 15 min at most to put on and you dont have to take but 3 bolts off.yes we will get this one on but it will be the last one from harley i put on.

gpp,

Yes, the HD part is harder to get on than the aftermarket but you're getting a new $200 belt that won't max out the adjustment. BTW, a 12 point 30 mm socket (not 39mm, that's the outside dimension) fits fine. the hardest part will be holding the flange while you remove the bolt, it's torqued to 118 ft-lbs.

All in all it took me 1 hour from start to finish once I got all the parts I needed together, 30mm socket, 3 arm gear puller and a lever to hold the flange.

I used an impact for the removal and install... THEN I read the "how do" and it warns not to use impacts. Why do I always install something first then read the included instructions later??

I have not noticed any damage to the moter but would not do it that way again....

I went to Sears, got a 30mm 12 pt. socket (fit perfect, no grinding), job took 30 mins and is the best money I've spent so far.

Can someone scan and post the installation instructions so we can judge how difficult it is to put on ourselves?

Thanks.

once you get the tools you need its not a problem to remove the old one and put the new one on.it just takes longer since you have to change out the sprocket flange and put the new one on.the after market ones you just take the 3 bolts out and put the new pullyon and reinstall the three bolts.either way its well worth the swap.

Anyone ever think of just getting the pulley? As it's a stock part on the 04's we should be able to buy just the pulley. I checked at my local dealer and it's listed for around $60.00. That's a heck of a lot cheaper than $244.00!

angus31, if you buy just the pulley it will not match or bolt up to the old hub, the kit comes with a new hub. The belt that comes with the 28 is also shorter and really needed for proper adjustment.

Specifically what are the tools required for the job other than a 12 point 30 mm socket? I saw some el cheapo gear pullers at Harbor Freight, will they do?

I used a 12 point Craftsman 30mm socket, a $10 3 arm gear puller from Pep Boys, breaker bar, torque wrench and an Allen wrench stuck in the end of a steel tube to for a lever to hold the flange when I loosened and tightened the nut. Took me longer to get the tools together than it did to change the pulley/flange

Max is right, the kit comes with a belt, pulley, flange, nut, 2 bolts, retainer and dust cover for $244 retail. The belt alone goes for $217 retail !! Ther is no cheaper way, the HD 28T puller will not work with the 30T flange. I was going to look into makeing the 30T pulley work with the 28T flange but I love the 28T so much I'll never go back..

Has anyone made a road trip with the 28 tooth yet I was wondering what your rpms were at 70 mph and could you still go 100 miles at that speed before needing more fuel.

Matt,

@ 70 mph the RPM's are about 4200. 5000 rpm @ 80. I did 500 miles over the last two weeks and on the highway @ 75 - 80 mph I got 40.3 mpg. I'd go 90 - 110 miles and never put in more that 2.5 gallons. Around town there's no difference in mileage. I get 35 or so around town and 40 - 41 on the highway, within 1 mpg of where I was with the 30T
