running poorly when cold

the last two times when i started my bike cold, it felt like it kind of sluggish for about half a mile , it didnt seem to miss , just felt like it was holding back. as soon as i could go thru the gears at higher rpms it was fine and ran perfectly, there were no codes either past or present and the dealer just installed a battery last week. the bike has about 700 miles and i use nothing 93 octane gas. i live in pa. and it has been about 10 to 15 degrees cooler the last few weeks, could this have something to do with it? any info would be greatly appreciated.

You're feeling the cold fuel enrichment dialed into the computer. It acts just like a choke on a carb bike. Try to warm the bike up until the RPM drops to at least 1300 rpm (1200 is warm idle). By then the fuel enrichment is minimal.

Mark,
actually in till the bike is warmed up to 190 degrees it will not rev past 8000 rpm!It will feel like a dog till properly warmed up!

Kaz, I have noticed that as well. I would let it warm up idleing and then would go for a ride. 1st gear to rev limiter, it would shake and bog at 8000-8500. It usually takes 3-4 minutes of continous riding till it takes care of itself.

I stand corrected, the idle speed will drop to 1200 @ 147 deg but that should be enough to eliminate the sluggish feeling anywhere short of redline. Besides, I live in Florida and warming up the engine is usually accomplished without me even turning the key

It's very noticeable to me.

Simple fact is that it's very bad for a motor to get 'pushed' when it's not up to operating temperatures.

HD wisely didn't allow you do to this via the ECU.

Personally I baby it a bit until it's wamed up.
