LtTruck43 wants to know Dino or Syn?
What does Code P1009 : Incorrect Password actually mean?

Background: Saturday i changed oil, primary, and tranny, and air filter (mobil1 Vtwin, M1 syn ATF, M1 syn 75-140, H-D stock, respectively). took it around the block, didn't notice any problems.
yesterday, took it down to the firehouse (3 miles, incl 1 on highway at 80mph) hosed it off, washed it, let it sit in the sun for 3 hours or so, then a 5 mile round trip for lunch, stop & go driving, and it sat for another 5 hours. I noticed on my way home that the engine light came on for several seconds after the start, at the same time as the low fuel light, gassed it up and brought it home. diagnosed it as a historical error code P1009, cleared it. This morning, 30 highway miles to work, with no problem.

My question is, what does that code actually mean, and what could have caused it?
Bike is an '04 FXSTDI with about 8000 miles, stock everything relevant here (I doubt my bucket seat caused this)

The ECM and TSM/TSSM exchange passwords during operation. An incorrect or missing password will set P1009(incorrect passwd) or P1010(missing passwd). P1009 may be set if a recent ECM or TSM/TSSM replacement did not follow the correct passwd assignment procedure. If password was assigned correctly, the ECM or TSM/TSSM could be the cause of the code.

Did you clear the code and did it come back? Could be historical code for a bazillion reasons like an aborted start or wetness or a power surge (battery cable on/battery cable off) or the moon being in the wrong phase. Clear the code and if it reoccurs then you may have an issue. Then again, your bike may just have a "personality". That would be a good thing.
