How long does it take?

An Indy quoted me 7hrs to install a set of gear drive cams. How does this compare to a chain drive install time?

It took about 7~8 hours to put my andrews 26 in........but that included:

1. tearing it down myself
2. trailering bike and cam plate 25 miles to indy
3. indy replacing inner cam bearings and pressing in new cams and bearings on plate
4. trailering 25 miles back home
5. putting it all back together including SE adjustable pushrods
6. somewhere in the middle of all this I stopped for lunch.

Of course, that was with a chain drive.....but even with gear drive, if your indy has the tools, I would consider 7 hours excessive if he's using adjustable pushrods.

Might take longer with the original or perfect fit pushrods (removing the tank and rocker covers), and 7 hours sounds like a "by the book" time quote for that job.

charge by the job

It is evident that some repair people charge you not by the actual time they have put in for there work. Alass you agree to a verbal and binbing agreement when the quote is given to you and you are asked to sign. One must negotiate before signing, they exspect us to negotiate the conract. Some will tell you its a supply and demand charge., negotiate a lowere price / and just like hireing a plumber have at least 3 estimates given to you before agreeing to the price.

Seems salty to me. hour to pull exhaust, hour to put back on, hour to install cams, hour misc, thats 4. Not saying I could, but I think a pro could.

a pro should be able to beat 2 hrs with the tools and shop. but book hrs are for average mechs, the first time, using a manual and basic tools.

csoday is reading this now saying WTF is this?
I believe the time code states 3.5 hours. I think that includes pulling the heads to remove the pushrods and lifters.

Time codes are written based on stock motors (stock pushrods). The book doesn't figure for cutting the stock rods and replacing with adjustables so you have to unload the rods to swap the cams.
