Crank end play?

Can someone help me to understand crank end play? I have recently had a noise coming from the primary in my 95" dyna and found the compensator will move in and out .008. and the nut all looks well clamped up. There deosn't appear to be any vertical movement, only that it can be moved in and out ever so slightly. It is a 2003 mod and I am aware (paranoid) of the possible crank bearing failure and was wondering if someone could explain the end play thing for me so I might be able to either just shim or cut the nut, or do the crank bearing fix.
Thanks Mick

Does the nut just look tight, or did you check the torque?

There is no method to set crank end play in an assembled 2003 engine AFAIK. The nut may even be torqued right but not clamping down the components correctly. Check the stack and if need be put a shim or machine couple of the nth of the nut.
