PCIIIusb's...... just how robust are they?

Is the PCIIIusb extremely reliable?

The reason I ask is that if it should ever fail, the existing ECM flash would have to work well enough to get you to a place to either reload the PCIII or replace it.

If you go SERT, the map is flashed into the ECM without an intermediary device to be dependent on.

What's the collective here think about this?

No practical experience except with the PCIII USB I used it for about 5-6 months. I had 70 hp and 72 tq with stock head pipes, V&H Ovals, SE Air Filter. Custom map Dyno run.

It, with the stock ECU is packed in my tools when I travel over a couple hundred out. Just in case the TCFI has a fit. And since the digital camera travels and with wireless hookup everywhere, and you need a way to look at either tuner, a laptop is always along.

PC failures are rare but not unheard of. With Just AC and pipes, a PC failure would'nt stop you from getting home. After I added my 37G cams, my PC map required as much as 40% additional fuel in one spot. Realizing how dependent my bike had become to the PC, I switched to a SERT for piece of mind when I'm a 1000 miles from home. But for a light tune up, the PCs simplicity is hard to beat.

Thanks for the replies!

This is exactly what I'm trying to ascertain, does it make sense to have another device in there that overlays information on top of the ECM map or just have the SERT flash a map and keep the ECM as the only control point.

In my little brain, I think it makes more sense to keep it simple. And Springer's excellent tutorial of the SERT answered a whole bunch of my questions about how it is used.

I think I might switch to the SERT for piece of mind also.

Any other experienced opinions out there?
