How much lift is too much for street reliability

I've read some postings regarding the adverse effects to the valve train with high lift cams, premature worn guides etc. What is a good lift for the street that will not cause the wear and tear but still provide the desired torque and flow we all desire, I am assuming somewhere between .510" and .590"

Thanks.

What kind of bike do you have? bagger? superglide? big cams are cool but in bagger it may be a dog off the line, especially with more overlap. Big lift and duration are going to operate at higher rpms, how much time do you spend riding at 6000rpm?
