Backfiring - UPDATE - fixed the problem

Well...you guys might remember a few weeks ago I was having problems with my '99 FXR3 (Evo) backfiring REALLY loud and coughing out the carb a little when it was warming up and for 3 miles or so after it was warm.

I had just changed to hotter plugs, and ALL these problems were caused by the dang plugs. YEP...you heard it right...just a simple thing like running a hotter plug made my bike run like absolute sh*t. I didn't go wildly hot either...I went from a BP7ES to a BP5ES. The BP5ES is the factory recommended plug for my bike, but as I suspected...has become too hot a plug for my setup.

So if any of you are having a problem that you just can't figure out with backfiring/popping out the exhaust...you might want to try running a cooler plug to see if it helps. Sure made my bike run smooth as glass again!!

Thats great! Sometimes we all forget the simple fix and make things to complicated by adjusting 15 different things on our bikes. Follow the abc's of wrenching this is the reason for it. Enjoy your ride!

Yeah tell me about it, I had backfiring in the carb and out the pipes.

After changing the ignition on my bike I it still ran like grabage. I went to change the coil and found ther rear terminal of crane hi-4 SF coil, the wire connecting it to the ignition had been crimped badly and was just barely hanging on and I suspect arc'ing occassionaly.

Fixed that and it's been all good.

Now I have a new ignition, and a new in the box coil(for when mine goes I guess).

This was also missed by local HD shop here in Denver.

It was Basic.
