I don't do sportster's but since nobody else replied, here's my suggestion.
Big twin's normally are done by either: (1) upping the slow jet to a 48 and nothing else (not my preferred fix) (2) leaving the slow jet alone, shimming the needle or replacing the needle and take the cap off the mixture screw and adjust it. Normally there is no need to change the main jet as the EPA doesn't screw with emission testing that far up in the range.
Keep in mind this is big twin stuff. I would think it would apply to sportsters too but am not sure of that. Go talk to a indy shop that deals with sportsters.

You might want to pick up a copy of 101 Harley Projects. It has alot of info on basic and upgrades on sportsters. I think the Wal mart web site sells them for about $20. Hope this helps.

45 and 180. Dynojet says 175 with a/c or pipes, 180 with both. They also say keep the 42, but change it to a 45.

Thank you very much for the straight answer Murphdog! Your answer is much appreciated. As for "go buy a book" - I thought the internet and forums like this were supposed to serve as a source to ask questions and get opinions and recommendations from other people. Stupid me - posting on a forum that serves the sole purpose of answering questions about "engine mods" when all my answers are sitting on a shelf at Wallyworld, what the hell was I thinking! Guess this whole technological revolution BS was a bunch of hoopla. Hey kids; next time you need answes to a question, don't search the internet which holds vast amounts of information, support your local Wallyworld and GO BUY A BOOK!

What about the TC-88? I just got S.E. pipes and air cleaner. I got a C.C. Rider re-jet kit cause a dealer told me that's what they use. The kit told me to replace the main jet with a #180. The one I took off was a #190! Didn't I just make it even leaner? I'd like to know what others have used in their TC-88 for main and slow jets. Please include the pipes and air cleaner you are using.

Murphdog is right on the money. On my wife's sportster ,I went to a 45 slow jet. Make sure you drill out the plug covering the idle mixture screw. Go slow with a 1/8 drill bit. once through the plug just screw in a sheet metal screw and pull the plug out with a pair of side cutters. You will find the screw set at about 1 to 3/4 of a turn from closed. Start at two turns out. My wife's ended up at 2 1/4 turns out. She doesnt have to warm the thing up for 10 minutes before she rides anymore, but more important to me is the bike no longer farts and stalls on take off from starts whenever it feels like it.

Most kits have a replacement emulsion tube (the tube that the main jet threads into). If you looked closely you will probably see that there is considerably difference in the emulsion tubes as far as tiny holes go. That's why the smaller main jet. I've never messed with the CC Rider kit but I'd almost bet it's like all the others.
When people talk about jets, especially main jets, you've got to know what emulsion tube they are using otherwise you are just mixing apples and oranges.

Now that you mention it, I did change the tube too. What about the slow jet? Should I change that too, or just continue to play with the idle screw? I really don't like the backfiring.

Syclone, did you change the main jet to a larger size or just leave it at a 170 (assuming her piglet is a 1200)?

nogods, I had a 48 slow jet in mine with pipes and a/c and it was too rich even with the mixture screw only 1/4 turn out. I have a 46 in now, mixture screw about 2 1/4 turns out if I remember correctly. The 45 probably would have worked OK but I can't stand to leave anything alone. Most people will tell you to put the 48 in, and it may work fine for them. H-D doesn't sell the 46 btw, I ordered mine from J&P. Main jet with the Dynojet emulsion tube was 180 as recommended when the motor was 88". Motor is now 95" with 203 cams and I changed the main jet to 185. Dynojet recommendations have always work for me. Like Ed Y, I don't have any experience with the CC Rider kit but he's probably right (he always is from what I've read) about it being the same as the others.
