fwiw, I think you should consider getting head work done while you have it apart and are rebuilding. Sending the heads to bean@big boyz is not that expensive.
From the advice and research I have done, I don't think the stock carb will hold you back..esp your 42...
Otherwise I would probably have a new carb on mine.

Thats about what you will get, but the low end torque is much better. When I had mine done I thought this was how the bike should have come from the factory. I also went with Andrews 26 cams and it pulls hard, you can avoid down shifting, just twist the throtle.

You won't like those 585's without a big bore, cheapest power you can find. Do the 98 and be done with it.

I have a set of S&S 585G cams that I ran for a whioe in my '02 Road King sitting on a shelf. They are available if you want 'em, nothing at all wrong with them, just not a good bagger cam & I didn't have enough compression for them. If you're interested let me know.

I ran 585s in a 98" Dyna at 10.5 and loved it. Bike ran hard and still had good street manners. 185ccp and were I doing it again, I'd bump that to 190 - 195.

No compression releases but if I did it over, I'd have them. It hasn't been a problem but I'm sure it would make it easier on the starter and such. I have the original starter, just upgraded the cables. Close to 60,000 miles on the bike, 45,000 on the build. Stock replacement type battery does fine.
