calling all 124 owners

Reliability issues? Ride-ability? Is there something you would different if you could do it over again?

That's the reason I am going with Feuling 630's with S&S 640g's as a back up....easy on the valve train AND capable of big power!

The motor won't be the problem. Big power will break stuff, motor mounts, swingarm bushings, bag mounts, bag supports etc, i would suggest alittle stash on the side for those type of upgrades. I would also suggest getting ride of the bag pins and using bolts drilled for a cotter pin. I have had them pass me up going down the road.

Not just a little stash on the side, a substantial one. I've emptied the piggy bank once or twice now. I removed the bag pins and went to bolts along time ago. It not a good feeling when one sees a custon painted bag fall off at 70 miles per.

Drilled for a cotter pin....hmmm that's a great idea, thanks.

Mother, it sounds as though you are heading in the right direction, I would have loved my 124 if it was built right. It was fun while it lasted.

You will learn after you build and break in the motor where the weak points are.

Invest in a glide pro motor mount at the least.
Oil and primary oil changes every 2k(or less miles)
Poly riser bushings
rear tires dont last as long even with out abuse
batteries dont last as long
my saddlebag mounts snap constantly.

etc...etc...Every bike is a bit different, but you will figure out what it needs when you get going.

Just havin a little fun with ya Mother.
I'm sure you will find all the gremlins on the bike in the first month of riding it. The not so tight bolts will show their faces quickly with your new found power you will have.
Just make damn sure your rear pulley is loctited on and torqued down good!!!
It took me about a week before I found a bolt 1/2 way backed out on my pulley and the other four finger loose. The extra hp/torque shows these things quickly.
Keep us posted on the progress of the 124"er.

Ray, all good here and thank you for the heads up!!!
Just got off the phone with Randy@Hyperformance. pistons(CP) and cylinders(new style S&S)are ordered...I'm going with the R&R wheels, randy assures me they are solid and I am confident in him. he will be boring the cases and setting up the 'long block'

I ride mine very hard and demand it to run back to back tank fulls consistently... 11hrs to the dragons tail, blistered the front and rear tires for two days, then 11hrs home only stoppng for fuel and parking the cruise on 90mph when on the freeways.... I bar hop, two-up wheelies are my niche (not my wifes) without her on the back it just spins in the first three gears. I love it!

If I had to do it over.... Err emm... well I am, but thats just because I am antsy and addicted to power. Just build it "right" the first time! If I have learned one thing in always building my own race motors/bikes its spend the money the first time. Any corners cut are inches cut off of your smile down the road.

Seriously, my 124 even with noisy cams, is more "rideable" than you think. Sure it will have quirks, but thats half the fun.... one of my push button decomps got sludged up on a long ride and stuck open upon start up.... you would have thoght someone had a 19/19 going off inside your eardrum.... lol.

All good affter 5000 relatively trouble three miles, going through one rear tire, I am just going bigger/faster because I can and I will never be satisfied.

Smart move Mother...Randy will give you a 1st class long block back to sink your teeth into. He is the man.
I've got two aluminium plates I made for bolting on top of the cylinders for shipping a motor with the cylinders and pistons installed. They keep everything nice and stable using two head bolts on each cylinder...especially with the base gaskets installed. Oh...Aviation sealant is excellent for coating the base gaskets...it never hardens and seals it bone tight...never have to worry about them weeping.
Let me know if you want to borrow the plates...I can send them to you.

Too bad to hear of all the problems, our 124" has been problemless except for muffler hangers off the bottom of saddlebags. Finally found the permanent cure for that.we are running Police bags on both bikes zero problems.
