hd std belts are good up to about 85 hp. but i use one with my S n S sidewinder because I don't drag start and pound 2nd gear. if i did surely it would break... again, well there was that one time when ya know just testing and pop it went. if you take it "normal" hd std belt drive will work fine. but there are aftermarket belts avail. BDL comes to mind.
good luck

I run 83hp out of an 80 inch evo. I pull hard off the line and when I pull the wick tight I never let off the throttle when shifting. This bike will lift the front end banging it into second and third. I have had a quarter inch hole in my belt from forcing a rock through it from the inside for two years now. These belts are tough as nails. The belt even if it had the HD logo on it is still made by the Gates rubber co. They call it a poly chain.

HD now also sells a heavy duty belt but I'm not sure if it's available for all model bikes. Check the P&A book.

HD belts are Gates brand. Boss Hoss Cycles run a Gates Poly-Chain belt. They rate their 502 c.u. bike at 502 h.p. The belt that they use is similiar to the HD belt. The might call it a Heavy Duty or something, but nonetheless, it's a similar belt. HD just came out with a Heavy Duty belt for Touring Models with sidecars on 'em. I have a buddy that just built a 124 inch Zippers Kit T.C. He used the HD Heavy Duty belt just in case.

Just dug out the HD P&A book. The heavy duty belt is only for 97 and later FLT bikes, ie, Electra Glides, Road Kings, Road Glides. Retails for $239, by the way. They're proud of that sucker.

If you have access to an industrial supply company, you can but a Gates polychain for about 20-30 dollars..

the problem is not how much power is applied to the belt but how abruptly the power is applied that causes most failures.

I've got better than 9k miles on mine, and that's with a motor pumping out 114 HP and 119 # of tourgue. The belt looks as good as new!

my friend has a 100hp+ engine and a 240mm rear tire, he is stripping his belt, guess its the fat tire being to much of a load
