What would you do with a new 103?
One of my really good friends just sold his 03 fatboy, that had a nice 107" that I built, think it made 110/117 if I remember right. He bought a 2013 road king and he wants me to "hook up the motor". I am thinking exhaust, a/c, tuner. and cams, maybe head work and shave'em down for a little more compression. So what would you guys do, what cams, pipe, a/c, etc.... he likes to twist the throttle and is not scared to wind it out. I'm thinking, leave the pistons and cylinders (they are new, and already 103")pull the heads for cnc port and bigger intake valve and fly cut for compression, cams????not sure, looking at something like s&s 585, input?

Sounds like the buld and your friend might benefit from a forged piston. I bought a hold over 2011 96in. just for the fact I wanted forged pistons when I had it built. So if I was swapping them out I didn't need the 103, saving some money in the process.

I completly agree on the forged piston vs cast junk pistons. But they are brand new and should be ok for the first build. I will keep the ccp below 190 and limit the rpm to 6000 then they should hold up ok.
Anyone here have a new 103" that has been modified? What cams and other work did you do and how do you like it?

Bang for the buck? Throw a cam, exhaust , tune on it .
Just finished Frankie b's 103 with a cycle Rama 575. It didn't lose anything down low, and from 2600 up it just flat gained
There are several cams that work good in them.
Could he live with 90-95 hp 105-115 tq, ( exhaust dependent )

Haven't had it on the dyno yet because I've decided to get some head work done, but even with a canned map it is impressive

If ya are flowing the heads and going bigger cams it's better do some 10.5 or so forged pistons than cutting the heads. If ya don't do the heads, look at the new andrews 57h?

If it's new, what's wrong with just riding it untill it breaks down or dies of old age??? Some people have more money than sense. In the wind.

Just converted a 96" to 103". Used a set of pistons from a factory 103" and bored the cylinders out. Pistons were .010 down below cylinder surface, so used .030 head gaskets. Used an Andrews 57h cam with factory push rods. No head work. Very impressive seat of the pants results for a very low cost build. Definately much stronger than the factory 103's I have ridden.

I'm looking for a cam in the 570-600 lift with a intake duration of 240-250. Something that hits hard in the middle and pulls all the way through. I'll have the heads done and cut for the right compression.
I know there are people making 120 hp/tq out of 103", we're not looking for that right now. Maybe 105/110 because of the cast pistons. I might talk him into ditching the stock slugs and going for a set of cp's and bumping up to a 107, not sure yet. It's kinda like where do you stop. If we make it a 107 then we need a new throttle body, injectors, clutch, etc etc etc....

Sell the engine on ebay and replace it with a reliable and potent crate motor?
