Cam Question
I understand that if the crank runout is more than .oo3 it's not advisable to go to a gear drive setup, does anyone make a half and half setup, chain drive crank to cam but gear drive cam to cam? Seems this could eliminate the worst half of the tensioner wear problem.

bob wood makes a belt, but IMHO, not worth the $$$$ . if ya wanna run gears, fix the crank, remember, a shifting crank is eating the oil pump. it aint all about the noise. and remember, the inside tensioner get hotter.

As Dennis said, Bob Wood does offer a belt driven set-up, but it does come with a price tag. However, you can advance/retard the cam in about 10 seconds, while on the dyno.
He also offers a roller chain system that has roller chains, both in and outside of the cam plate. Nice piece, that is really reasonable.

Great advice for Scott and Dennis...
What is your TIR though?

I haven't even opened the cam chest yet, I am thinking of a cam upgrade over the winter and I've read of possible runout problems and gear whine, etc and was wondering if anyone maybe sold a setup like this even thou I hadn't heard of one, Thought I'd ask. Thanks.

I personally haven't used it but what about the hydraulic cam chain conversion kit PN 25284-08 the Moco has. A little pricey but can be had cheaper from a 20% off dealer.

That would really not be feasible, as gear to gear pairs rotate in the opposite direction, where-as chain drive pairs rotate the same direction.
Your proposed combination would require a unique (different than chain or gear drive) cut of the "same" cam grind ~ meaning a third grind of a cam that may already be offered in chain or gear drive.
I know what I'm trying to say.... just not sure it's coming thru the keybd clear....
If you've got an 06 or older TC w/more than optimal runout, consider the roller chain conversion. There are many grinds available this way already (TMan, Woods, Andrews).
Good luck!

The Andrews deal leaves you stuck with their cams. The other lets you choose from any cam that fits 99 - 06 and is chain drive

The Bob Wood units have roller link chains on BOTH sides of the cam plate. Nice!!

Does the Bob Wood up-grade conversion kit have/use something different than the 07 and up OE components like the Andrews kit and some of the other kits out there? (ie with roller chains inner and outer, upgraded pump and tensioners etc.).
Are his conversion cams configured differently (other than lifts and timing events) vs. say the Andrews "N" series conversion cams?
Always looking for a better mousetrap.
Thanks.

herko, its same as andrews kit, with exception of cam grind and bobby includes more pieces and nice instruction sheet. they take an 07-up cam and fit it to the old style inner bearings, then the new oem plate allows use of new oem pump. then it includes new style outer sprockts and chain, so it is a full conversion, not like HD's idea of the chitty tencioner hidden on backside, and new style on the outer side.

By looking at the picture it almost looks like the HD unit uses the new style tensioners on both sides, but then I may be missing something.
