Primary Bushing
Up grading my starter and noticed that the primary bushing was scored. Any tips on how to replace it. Also there seems to be some play in the starter jackshaft. I know when I put the primary back on it should align it but don't kow if it is normal or if the bushing in the inner pimary is worn also. It looked good on inspection.
Thanks, Dave

I realise I put this in the wrong section. Could one of the mods move it or should I retype in the primary trans section.
My apologies,
Dave

Hey Dave, never had to do one, but it should be pretty easy with the right puller i would imagine. Maybe a blind spot bearing puller or similar would work. MOCO sells them separately..
Pn# for the inner primary one is 33445-94a
for the outer primary is 33446-94a

I used a hacksaw blade or keyhole saw to cut the Jackshaft bushing in the primary cover. Once cut, it should easily fall apart. There is a notch in the cover that allows the blade to cut thru the bushing without cutting into the primary cover. Blind hole puller will work if you have one lying around that small, but a hacksaw blade is cheaper and will do the job with little effort. Likely your inner primary bearing is good, if not scored.
You should change out your jackshaft screw. It may be bent a bit. The dealer should have one in stock. Use loctite upon assembly of the screw.

Thanks for the replies. I used the hacksaw blade and it worked out well. I kicked the starter over before putting the primary on. It flew over. I put the primary on and just it just clicks. I also installed 84/10 starter gear. I'm going to loosen starter and maybe realingn if I can or check for that bent jackshaft bolt.
Thanks all,
Dave

Dave, what brand of starter?Stock or aftermarket? I have had that problem with some aftermarkey starters binding like that. Try mocking up the primary cover and then loosen the 2 starter mounting bolts. See if it spins over then.

Dave, if that does work, you might have to check the alighment and/or make a shim to correct it. I had that problem and found that the manual button on the plunger would be a lifesaver. Mine would only happen 1 in 30ish times though.

are you trying to replace the jackshaft seal without removing the inner primary? Because the right way to remove that bushing is with the inner off and use a socket to 'pop' it thru. Then to re insert with a socket and few light taps to get in place. Also not the direction of the seal. The seal is suppose to go on tapered end to the inside.

Dan does the button still need the key to start? hbmc, I replaced the bushing in the outer primary. I had the inner primary out over the winter and changed seal and bushing then. I was fed up when I put it all back together and best quit before things started flying. Patience isn't my strong suit!!! I just need to spend some time and use the suggestions you all have given me. I'll let you know how I make out.
Many thanks,
Dave

i changed both the inner and outer primary bushings when i went into mine..it would start really easy without the outer cover on,then put the outer back on it would hesitate..i cahanged both out and it and my all balls 1.4 starts like a stocker..also went ahead and changed the jackshaft bolt,as it has alil seal on the locktab...clean your ground cable ends and the ear of the starter..i also went to the parts store and made another cable that went from my upper ground bolt on the frame to the lower bolt on the frame ..seemed to help...

In the directions with the gear set if I had more than 1/8" space between the ring gear and starter gear to use a shim to tighten up the tolerence. I had a little over that and used the shim. Called Primo they told me to remove the shim and try it. It worked. I was so close to the 1/8" that the shim I used brought it to close.
Thanks for all the help,
Dave
