Dual Battery Set Up

A few people had asked me about my dual battery set up on my FXR so I thought I would post it.
Shows my oil bag w/vent and check valve and a Harley battery in front, Odessey 680 in rear in an extra battery box that we put in.. Also placed some aluminum between the oil and the front battery as a heat barrier. Works great...

How many cubic inches you trying to spin with the starter or what kind of electrical draw requires 2 batteries?

Just tryin' to understand...

It's for a 126", but I use the same set up on my race bike as well.
A little bit overkill for my street bike but I like to take all the starting issues out of the equation. Never want to be that guy who can't get the big inch bike started. Spins over instantly like a 80"er-Just some insurance for those hot California days...

Had to do the same thing on my 124" TC-B except my 2nd battery was in the saddlebag.

But I hated having to do that after reading of so many 124" builds that started up just like a stock motor...

Maybe on this next go-round things will be different.

Well, that explains it. Yeah, with 126" engine, I can see a need. Thanks...

I got a buddy in Florida runnin' about the same size engine in a Dyna, Now ya got me wonderin' how he's startin' it...

Paul, do you run this dual battery setup in lieu of compression releases or in addition to? If the former, do you have your heads dual plugged as well?

Paul,
On our AHDRA racer, we used to run an 18V Terrorist Battery, which was a total loss system(no charging system) to insure 12V min, for the 4 plug ignition system, on the big side of the track.
Used to use 2 12V 1000 cca Interstates hooked togather(starter cart) to make 24V, to drive the 7 hp Hitachi hand-held starter, to fire the 17.25 cr, 108" engine.
In that application, those batteries HAD to be kept at a FULL charged level or else.........

No, I have electronic S&S releases but if you read posts on other threads about this, you will see that some big inch engines still have hot start/restart issues sometimes. This just set up just takes this out of the equation-confidence at every turn of the key. Now if I ever get around to getting the EZ start cams, I will remove a battery and save some weight...

Charlie Hadayia Sr., from S&S, was here last Thursday, and had some of those cams for display. Centrifigal force operates them as he alerted us.
