107ci (stock stroke) build sheet. your thoughts?

Looking to see 120/120 if possible...
  • Axtell 107ci kit (4.125 bore, 4" stroke) with the domed AND dished pistons
  • S&S 640G cams
  • Heads undetermined... Big Boyz maybe?
  • Carburetion also undetermined...suggestions?
  • Crank welded, trued, balanced, timken converted
  • Exhaust V&H big radius 2-2 with tq cones (I know I will give up a little here but I'll sacrifice 2-3hp for aesthetics..not fond of 2-1)
  • Ignition undetermined

The bike is a 2003 FXDL. Fairly light (relatively speaking of course) because it's barebones. no bags, windshield or anything else. It's my local runabout hot rod that sees both city and highway use

Help fill in the blanks? Think it'll make the power I want and not have to rev to the moon?

pretty vague description ,you dont know what heads or carb you might use or not use but your gonna just throw in 640 cams? arent you the guy who said the guys who tout big flow numbers dont know much? but your gonna throw 640 cam in a 107 and dont think you need a really good head for it. not tryin to be a jerk sorry.

I think the heads should be tailored to fit the cam and exhaust. Seems backwards to me to buy heads THEN a cam I guess. Maybe I'm in the minority there

doesnt sound like a very good combo for what your lookin for thats all . maybe some of the other guys will agree with you or not. but 640s in a 107 and not rev to the moon just dont sound good together.

Crank

Looks like for a little more a 117" is the way to go..
Check the price of having Hobans build a 4 3/8 cvo h-beam crank.
Maybe kick yourself in the azz later.

Cheers!

I'm also going to be building a 107" 4.125 bore this winter. My plan is to use a 45mm Mikuni. I've got a 42mm on my 95" and I really like throttle response.

Piecing a build together is fun...

Fwiw, you are starting off on the wrong foot though. Your first sentence is what numbers your looking for. Well, whats you riding style, how much you wanna spend? etc...
My advice to you would be pick your budget and builder or head porter. I am not sure if Bean will do heads for a build like you want, but check with him if you want to use him.

A 640 can work well in a good 107 build, but other cams will give better rideabilily and more fun.

IMO, that 640 is too tall for what you get out of it. I'd put a 9b in that biatch and go with a 1.940 or 2.0 head. That's what I'd do with a GOOD exhaust. IMO, your build is quite mis-matched at this moment.

I never said anything about asking Big Boyz about using the cam. To me it seems the guys doing your head porting should know what cam you plan to use, so the ports are tailored to work the the cam's lift and duration characteristics. I think you can pick a cam based upon the flow numbers of your heads as well, but being the cams are more the heart of the motor (and they determine the RPM range more than any other single component), it wouls make sense to me to pick a profile based on riding style, and what you ultimately want out of the motor.

I like to ride solo, and I ride fairly hard. My bike is my release from the stress of everyday life. The harder I ride, the less I can think about everything else in the world, because I am focused on the road.

I want a bike that tears it up. I come from sport bikes (my last a 400lb 125hp 600cc Triumph that ran 10s). I'm not afraid to twist the wrist, but I'm not a daredevil either.

I had an indy build my motor last year with a 95" kit and TW37B cams, tweaked carb, etc. Then I opened it up down a straightaway against my father on his stock 06 fatboy and realized we were dead even. I don't want to be dead even. I want to go fast.

All that being said, I'm open for head/cam combo suggestions from those of you more in the know. I'v ebuilt cars since I was a kid.... everything from old carbed SBC motors to alcohol burning turbocharged VW sandrails, to LS series vette motors. But i'll be the first to admit I'm climbing a steep learning curve with the Twin Cam stuff. I've owned and ridden motorcycles for 30 years, but this is my first big twin.

I bow to the knowledge base here. That's why I registered. There's no good tech info at HDForums, and I was tired of reading about what grips looked best. I heard this was the place to come...and why I asked for opinions.
