Hi Flow Air Filter Recommendations

Thinking of replacing my air filter and was curious as to my options. I have used K&N in the past, but are their any others i should consider? I need one that will feed a 100+ HP T/C. Thanks

Google the overflow air filter element. It will give you all that you need and more

Check out Deweys and Zippers - they both have a fairly inexpesive setup that uses the backing plate for the SE Stage 1 if you already have that. After completing my build, was gonna replace my SE Stage 1 intake with one of them but my dyno tuner (dynodoctor.com) told me that for my build, anything beyond the SE Stage 1 would result in little or no gain. This was based on previous dyno testing he has done with stock setup, SE setup, various other setups...and...with NO intake a/c at all. He says for a typical 95" build, as long as you get rid of the stock restrictive setup that's where the most bang for the buck is. Anything beyond that, it's splittin hairs. In general, only big inch builds will benefit from the increased air flow many of these aftermarket setups provide. Based on that I stayed with the existing SE setup.

Does your bike choke up and black smoke at Cruise speeds, if not why is an air cleaner change necessary?

Anything more than the K&N that comes with the SE kit or the Ness kit is overkill. I think the Ness is cheaper. The K&N is on my 117" and provides no measurable restriction.

A while back Bill Bishop tested a number of filters and said the type Sands, Gerolamy and others use flowed best and the Wood 325 was just a whisker behind.

IMO, both will flow more than most motors need and I'm sure many others will do the same.

K&N, Hillside modded, Sands, Woods and other large surface area filters are fine for a 100 hp bike. You are nowhere near the power it takes an engine to produce to have a good filter being an issue as far as restricting air flow into your engine.
Pick one you like, that has the big surface area, and fits so that your leg can get around it, and it doesn't stick out too much.

Not always true. Might want to get on a dyno for a few runs to see. On my 98 kit years ago the s/e filter sucked almost 2hp from it. My filter on my 117 has 0HP/TQ loss. Scotts filter is about the same flow wise, but fits under a stock cover and is priced right IMO.

Are you guys basing this on the horsepower? I hate to draw conclusions from 2-3 hp differences. Too many variables come into play. In my opinion, the best way to test air filters is to monitor the MAP sensor during a wide open throttle pull to redline. If the pressure reads the same at 2000 rpm as it does at 6200 then the filter is not restrictive.

Have you ever done a run without and air filter to see if the reading changes?

And yes mine is just based on tuning it on a dyno..2-3 hp loss is too much in my book for something soo simple and cheap.
