S&S Crank issues

I want to hear some issues and correct fix of some S&S crank failures. I just had my 4 5/8 crank go with runout of 0.042. It was balanced and welded. Now I'm at the point of do I have the pinion shaft replaced and rebalanced. Go for an oversized crank pin if possible or what. I would like to hear some suggestions. I talked with Darkhorse and can get the Jims crank for about $1600 in which is still a option, is the S&S crank worth maybe going with an oversized crank pin. And also could someone help with some options for my parts list of cam plate, oil pump, pushrods, and major gasket set (cometic). The engine is a 131 so now I'm looking at everything apart and wondering at this time should I be changing from belt to chain drive.

If you're considering a new crank, the R&R 5 piece is a no brainer.

What is this crank going in, Twincam, Evo? is it a press together unit or a bolt together? What is the bike? You state, "some S&S crank failures" do you know of other similar problems or have an idea what created yours?

i am guessing its a twincam. the pinion shaft is intigrated in the flywheel (1 piece) and can not be replaced.why do you think it needs to be replaced? the connecting rods, crankpin set can be rebuilt with a new crank pin and oversized rollers. , sometimes there can be a problem when taking a welded crank aprart i would call john at darkhorseand talk to him about redoing it. it would probally be less than half of that 1600

The crank is a twincam in an of 05 ultra. I was on the freeway rolling about 70mph and heard the sound of lifters ticking just as I was getting off freeway then bike died. Found both exhaust valves stock open. Pulled cam cover to find four teeth broken off cam gear and timing slipped, problely what stuck valves when hit pistons. Cam plates shreaded and 0.042 runout. This engine only had 1100 miles on it. And I also inspected complete valve train to make sure that nothing went thru it. I was told by one shop that S&S cranks off the shelf are OK but the crank pin is not set up as tight as it could be. So now I'm at the crossroads of do I get a Jims Darkhorse crank with 18 month warranty on it and sell the S&S on Ebay.

If it was welded and balanced one would think it should not be out unless there is an underlying issue. Was the runout measured upon build and what was the end play set at. Also did the case have a Timken kit installed. Sucks having it let go at 1100 miles especially if it was balanced and welded. Curious as to who did the build, dealer, self or indy shop? Feeling your pain here.

The S&S press together cranks (all TC and 124" & up EVO) all need work before hard use. Darkhorse can put in a .001" pin, rebuild the rods, etc, & weld and pro-plug it, and you should be fine.
Just taking them out of the box from S&S and using them is asking for trouble down the road IMO

We seen S&S, Jims, and OEM slip.
Seems welding takes care of the crank from slipping, at least for us.

This makes an R&R 5 piece rebuildable crank look awefully good at $1,475.00. They won't slip. Looking at rebuilding that S&S crank even makes buying the R&R a no brainer like O1 said.

At 198 hp/173 ft/lbs I'd say that it get's "leaned on".
I will also say again, that more 1/4 mile and Bonneville motorcycle records have been established, and then broken, with S&S crank-equipped bikes than ALL others combined. S&S has been manufacturing(and were the inovators) stroker crank assemblies since the early seventies, and the Moco had them under contract to design the bore/stroke combination for the 80" Shovel, which laid the foundation for the 80" Evo. We all know the worth of that engine, and it's abilities.
So with that knowledge, make mine S&S.
