Try sliding the end of a slot screwdriver under the nut and apply pressure upwards. sometimes that will be enough to get the threads back to where they will catch. That would be my first choice prior to "more drastic measures"...JMHO

filter

Are you talking about the oil filter? If so, a large pair of chanel locks[slip joint pliers] should do the job. It will crush the filter but who cares. It isn't easy but it works. An other way is to drive a screwdriver all the way through the filter. Messy but it works. When tightening the new filter, tighten by hand and not too tight. When the engine is run they tend to tighten up from expantion so it will take more pressure to get it off than you exert to put it on. If it's the air filter, you may have to drill it out or grind it. I just read ShakeyJakes answer and you could have a buddy grab both sides of the cover and pull outward as you try to unscrew the bolt.

The air filter center nut? Well, since it's ruined anyhow, start ripping the filter element apart, see if you can reach inside with a long nose pair of pliers to hold the nut.

Question? Why are you "changing" a K&N filter? Just clean them and they're lifetime. Of course you need to remove them to clean, and there in lies your current problem!

if you do not space the outer cover, you get broken weld on the K&N, as well as any filter. problem is when you add the heavy cover, and you tighter the allen screw, vibration kills the center nut weld. a small nylon washer between the filter and cover cures the problem.

use an allen bit on impact. when you hit the trigger on the impact, pull gently on the cover, it should come right off. if not, drill or grind centerbolt off and then you can unscrew the filter from the studs.

hoping this helps.

If you come here asking for advice there are many that will be willing to help you. Folks come here with some of the most simple problems that would be laughed at on other forums. Yours is not a complicated problem. A little respect would be in order here. Jim

I don't think you disrepected anyone, but read your post, and you may rethink it, I for one offered you a new (used) filter for free, I understand your frustration, I had the one on my low rider strip out and I jb welded a nut behind it and fixed it. Its a memory now.
