hazer wants to know Dino or Syn?
exhaust popping

I have a 04 Road King and I suddenly seem to have a lean running condition.
When I let off the gas while ridding I am getting alot of popping out the exhaust and while ridding along I get an occasional hiccup like from the engine. When you try to get on it there seems to be a lack of power.

Now a little history, I pulled the tank off last winter and hod the dealer send it to Harley to be painted, they reinstalled the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator, could this be the problem? Just guessing but that is the last thing that was messed with, it semmed to run alright before.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

It's a fuel supply issue, either it's not getting to the injectors, the injectors are clogged/malfunctioning, or the SERT is going screwy.
You could throw a lot of money at it replacing parts, but the best thing would be taking it someone that works with the SERT, that has the test equipment to check it and the fuel delivery system.

Totenkopf is reading this now saying WTF is this?
it could be a lot of things but lets try something simple first. Have you run any injector / fuel system cleaner through your system yet?

I used a little bit of Techron concentrate plus in the gas tank last summer and wow! I couldn't believe how quickly the bike responded to the treatment. It was like getting an immediate tune-up. I actually could feel the difference in the butt dyno. I got it from NAPA for $10, best $ ever spent on a product like that. The PEA(additive) stuff, really works.

Try it, and report back.

The other thing on decel popping is, it can very likely be air leaking into an exhaust joint, either at the exhaust port gasket or at the header to muffler slip-on joint. If you make sure those are sealed, usually the popping goes away.

Yes I tried some cleaner in the tank first thing. I think there is a problem with the fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator or the hose in the tank.A dealer put these i back in the tank last winter when I had the tank painted by Harley.Since it ran fine before I think this is the place to start looking for problems. I will pull the stuff out of the tank and take a look.

I fixed the probem, the deaer mechanics had not put the fuel pressure regulator together right. For those of you who have seen these they had not got it locked into place right, the little ears were not locked in place.

Runs fine now!
