Stage 1 vs. Stage 2

I was looking on the HD site at the different Dyno charts for the stage 1 and stage 2 88 - 95 upgrade. The stage 1 looked like a 5-6hp bump and about 20 ft-lb of torque at between 3500-4k. The stage II looked about the same hp jump and only about 13-15 lb-ft of torque between the same peak RPM. Question is why would anyone even use the stage II if it isn't as good? Are the 203 cams that come with it that crappy? Something doesn't add up.

YankeeBob is reading this now saying WTF is this?
Don't even try to figure it out. If you want to spend that kind of money on an upgrade, take what you would spend at a dealer and take it to an independent bike shop and you are likely to get a much better build.

Don't believe everything you see on the HD website either.

If they got a 20 ftllb increase from doing the 95" upgrade alone...........I would be highly doubtful.

Much better results can be had with aftermarket parts..........and for less money.

I believe those figures are crankshaft numbers, not at the rear wheel.

They are also worked to the max performance possible, to show the best numbers they could ever post.

Another problem with obtaining reliable numbers with just a stage 1 or stage 2kit from the factory is they just swap out parts - no fitting of pistons and checking deck heights, no matching the new cams to the compression ratio desired, no headwork (which you really need with any serious cam upgrade), and so on. You would be much better served finding a good shop that can advise you as to what you want and expect out of your build, and what changes need to be made to meet and or exceede your expectations. There is also alot of of great info on the forum as well, if you want to do your own build. Good luck and ask away if you have any questions, all the members on here are great and have a wealth of knowledge and experience.

I guess I have a stage 1.5, I stayed with 88" but did cam and head work.

Power

Great responses, I have found that with decent pipes and a/c and the RR525 bolt in cam the torque comes on quick and is around 90/90 T&H (rear wheel) with 95" pistons and if you take the time to set the quench and compression even more. With the stage 2 head work, 100/100 T&H. Pulls much more heat out of the engine han the factory stuff also.
