Cam gear noise

I have had Gears installed for several years now and they are noisey when the engine comes up to tempture. I copied a quote that I read in the Thunder Press about a Cam Gear install and it describes my noise to a tee. Here it is." The most noticeable difference is that when the bike gets up to full operating temperature, the motor does emanate a low-key whirling, blender-type sound from the cam area. But that is of small consequence when compared to the reassurance I now have" I had the crank trued and welded and I'm running a Screamining Eagle Cam Plate and High volume Oil Pump along with Andrews 31 Cams and SE Perfect Fit push rods and still have the noise. It is in a 03 FLHRC. I read a lot about other peoples gears being quiet and have to wonder if others have the same noise when it comes up to Temp.

They make both undersize & oversize gears for that. Fit right they are quiet. Of course one person's idea of quiet can be different than another's.

Mine make a little noise when the bike is hot. Been that way for the last 25,000 miles. At first I thought I wouldn't like the noise but I got used to it and I don't even hear it anymore.

I've been running gear drive cams for the past 15000 miles..........barely any noise at all. A very faint whirling sound at times, but nothing at all to be concerned about.
I've heard some people's gear drives...........I really don't know how they deal with it, a loud squeeking sound that just doesn't quit.

Iowa

Go listen to that IH corn picker down the road from Country's, then come back and tell us if those cams are noisy.

Mine whines a bit when she is colt:

Then the gears quieten down a bit when she gets hot and the top end gets noisy.

Mine are much more quiet than that also, not to mention mine doesn't tick like that either. I'd be a unhappy camper with all that racket going on. I did have the service mgr at the dealer make the comment that mine was one of the quietest gear cam builds he had heard.

lifters

We have experienced a few cases where the lifter bores are a little loose and out of round and as the engine goes up in temperature and the oil thins it actually bleeds by the lifters instead of going through them and the lifters will bleed down and rock in the lifter bores. The rate of change of the cam can also cause some noise. As soon as the weather permits, put in staight weight oil and see if the noise doesn't change.

The camera does a great job picking up the noises. Much better than the ear when you are standing there. I've had the gears in 3 years and nobody in person has ever commented on the noise. At any rate as far as the hot clattering goes, I have chased that demon all that I am going to chase it. The bike was dead quiet when it was stock. When I put in the 26G's, I got the clatter. I talked to more than one expert on it and followed much advise. I swapped lifters, adjusted pushrods this way and that way, and added the famed Baisley spring. Nothing made a difference. Along my ways of noise chasing, I talked to a handful of others that used the 26G's and got the same results.

Mine's quiet while oil temp is low. Once the oil is up to temp. I get valve noise, which I believe is due to gear backlash. When I installed, I was at .0015" backlash. I plan to go with oversize rear and a ZZ pinion when I have time. Also, one thing not reported here is the lift of the cams which are noisy...mine is .625" lift.

Regards,
NC

Those are pretty loud at idle..........but I have heard worse.

Mine are no where near that loud, you can't even tell I have gear driven cams in it unless you listen closely.

Sounds like when your oil pressure drops, the upper end gets noisy.........sounds like the Baisley spring would help you out.

Steve

I have a Baisley spring. It made no difference.
