Loose Compensator Nut

I've got a ride coming up this weekend and noticed that my primary is making that rattling sound. I'll be checking for a loose compensator nut after work today. The question is: Can I use a thin washer instead of the .030 shim that every one talks about? If so, what diameter washer do I need and what's the thickest it can be? No dealers around me have the shim. If none of the above can I just replace the compensator nut with a new one?

look in the manual for the compensator spacers used for the chain alignment procedure... the .090" is the one recommended to use, but there are other thicknesses listed.

DO NOT use a regular washer... too much torque for a non-hardened washer to deal with.

You can go without the washer if you mill ~.030" off the inner end of the compensator nut... or do it very carefully with a file or whetstone, if you dare.

I have an extra .090" spacer in my toolbox if you desparately need it.

Also, look for a copy of the service bulletin here... it has the new torque procedure.

Oh yeah, don't snap your primary chain using a makeshift locking tool.

The TSB I saw said nothing about a shim, so I didn't use one. Doesn't mean you shouldn't.....just sayin...

Was that spec torque to 75#, then another 45-50 degree turn?? If not you will get a false torque reading and it might come loose again.

Are the stock ones hardened? Try hitting one with a file. Some of the ones I've seen are petty soft.. The main thing so that the surfaces be machined flat to distribute the load and no binding occurs during TQ.. I've been running a cad plated 3/4 inch washer (bored to 7/8) on a 113 ci evo with 3 inch BLD drive for the last 7 years and have not had any problems with front pulley or crank. Heck the balance master it supports is pretty soft metal.. It's been apart a few time to install rear belts, new front, clutch stuff, etc. Always seems to look fine.

I'm more in favor of turing some of the nut tho...
