If you want to know if the comp is loading correctly clean the bolt threads and inside the crank. Spin the bolt on with your fingers until it stops. With a dial indicator on the end of the shaft extension set it to 0. Further tightening with a ratchet should produce about.040- .060 + movement. This in effect is the preload of the disc washers. Without this, there is none and the comp is loose in contact between the cam and pocket of the sprocket. It will chatter, or rattle in this case. The new SE comp should fix all these issues with that stupid stock unit. I shimmed mine last year, so that's why I know about the preload. Mine is totally silent all season now. My symptoms were knocking during take off from a stop and clatter in fifth under 55. As it got hotter and heat soaked it would clatter in forth and even third sometimes. The ids was brought out to mask the inadiqate nature of the comp, but since I have a softail and no ids option, I had to do something as the bike in stock form was a p o s. Love the way HD turned a f u into even more cash flow with the ids. I see the 09s have it incorperated into the wheel hub now as opposed to a bolt on unit.

Has to be the comp,, it is a slight rap, almost like a lifter and almost like a piston when cold, in a car anyway...Pistons expand to FILL the hole when hot...Anyway, pistons and crank are new..noise was there before..Deck height about .030..

Got to be comp,,anything else, that I know of, that can make that kind of noise has been eliminated...
Sig did you do a timken while you had the cases apart? Another option is the direct drive 30 tooth front primary sprocket from evo inc...it will get rid of the comp sprocket

Yes, I did the timken conversion,,,Crank was S&S replacement..kind of pricey... End play is .002...Had to cut the spacer to line up the primary chain, damn those things are hard..I did not have a toolpost grinder for my lathe so I just burned up a bunch of carbide bits.. 1.102 length worked for my bike..Amazing, the S&S crank has less than a needles width runout on my Starrett dial indicator...and harley cant do this because??????
Anyway, noise was there before crank replacement..

Thanks,
Bill
