2008 TC96 Vibration
I have a 2008 FXDC with TC96. No mods. When I am on the road and the engine is good and warmed up I get what appears to be a harmonic vibration at 70-75mph when I go from 5th to 6th. The vibration occurs at about 60 mph in 5th, and so on down the line which leads me to believe it is RPM related and NOT chassis. The vibration is bad enough it's like riding the paint shaker at Home Depot. Has anyone else experienced this? I would like to know before I go fight with the dealer over it.

My '07 FXDC vibrates between 2800-3200 rpm. Does it in any gear, even in neutral sitting still. I fought the dealer about it and lost. I've replaced and shimmed the front isolater and it made no difference. Nothing touching the frame that I can find. I've ridden several other '06 and '07 Dynas that didn't vibrate at all, so I know something isn't right somewhere.

I have a feeling it may be crank runout. I've been an ME long enough to know rotational balance harmonics when I feel it. I checked with some of the other riders in my group and have been told that thier TC96's run pretty smooth. I confirmed it with some of the Axemen too. Looks like it's time to deal with the dealer. hint, have seen 07 crank that ate the oil pump, but HD would not warranty it because it was less than .012. if you check and are more than .003, stomp the brake at 6000 rpm a few times to help it get over the liiiiimit. LOLOL
* please do not try this unless you understand completely that you could kill yourself. oh, leave the clutch engaged while shifting the crank.

I totally agree on the safety issue; Stomping on the brake at 6000 rpm could result in death or serious injury. (00030a)

If you want to trash the crank, the safer way would be to get going like 40mph, put it back in first and dump the clutch.
Be sure you are in a area with no traffic (Off road would be best) and on a strait level area.
That jolt will screw the crank for sure.
(Warning, the presiding was sarcastic, failure to understand that could lead to your name being added to the Darwin Award.)

I rode a Low Rider demo and it had a vibration like you describe. It must have had a junk crank too? I assumed these engines vibrated a lot? After all, why did they make the "B" engine? MoCo wouldn't have made a balanced version unless it was really bad, right?

I have an '07 with close to 40K. Minor mods- torque cam- A/C-Thundermax-mufflers-True Trac- Progressive 440's. The last few thousand miles something changed and I was beginning to suspect crank or the timing chain tightend up too much. I replace the motor mount with only about 50% relief. Just returned from a tour of New England and I brought the laptop along to do some tuning to the T Max. Running now a lot leaner at low throttle openings and the vibes have all but dissapeared.
Some thing to check---find the front headpipe clamp mounted below the transmission cover on the R side. When the bike is fully warmed up after riding leave it running and loosen the bolt up with a 9/16'ths inch wrench and re tighten.
If still there the next step is choose a tuning device to bring low load fuel delivered to 14.2 to 13.8 AFR. The IED's are the cheepest solution for a otherwise 'stock' bike. Lets not all start chasing the Crank Runout Boogeyman.

Didn't mean to jump on the crank runout bandwagon, but it sure seems like rotational harmonics to me. Of course if I try some of the solutions I was given above, I wouldn't need to worry about vibration anymore. Pretty tough to ride in a full body cast! I do plan on getting a set of IED's due to an issue with low load surging which is more than likely lean mixture. I haven't tried the clamp trick yet. Heard about it. Thanks for the replies.

Well, the bike is now back at the dealer. They have had it most of the day. I was pretty detailed about the vibration and the agreed it shouldn't do that. Now I'll wait and see what they find. They already mentioned tuning and new downloads. That may be ok since the bike has developed a bad case of the farts lately. Not sure why. Plugs look normal and I use good fuel in it. I'll let you all know the outcome.

Well the dealer had it all day and only rode it for 10 min right before I picked it up. Wouldn't you know it, "It's a Dyna. They all do that." Time to call MoCo and get the factory rep involved. What fun.

Please read more into the compensating torque speck. Factory isssued a lot of 96's with wrong torque. I have gone through 1 oem tire, two engine struts 7 weeks in shop and finally...it was the compensating sproket, but harley said it's a fluke.  If you read more about it... that flukes becoming a reality...

If indeed the tq wasnt proper then why didnt HD issue a recall/SB whatever? When chasing the clatter noise before the IDS was release this tq of comp sprocket was also brought up. I even paid out of my own pocket to at least get a work sheet that stated that they were going after the noise no dealer could ever hear.Many other owners did the same and none were found out of tq.These were early builds.And HD wouldnt ok the check!

I got corporate involved.  Corporate called the dealership and said that my BuB's would have to be taken off and returned back to stock before the would pay for any warranty work would be performed! I guess I shot my self in the toe on that one.  I am getting ready to sell and buy two BUSSA's
loving the 7yr warranty!!!!!!!!!!!
