But if a manufacturer asks a whole lot more $$ for their product and it's "Made in the USA", that should still mean something-at least to me it does. I would much rather have "quality over quantity! And customer service is EVERYTHING. A salesman might sell you the first bike, but the service after the sale and the service dept. will sell the 2nd bike! IMHO- HD ought to step up to the plate- because it's the right thing to do. If you lose your credibility you've also lost the customers trust! In turn, you've lost the return business, which is your lifeblood in business. Ride safe!

If you accept the defects, it only allows HD quality control to care even less..
And since the EVO put HD back on the map, they seem to be getting cocky & sloppy again..
I'll stick to my evos..................................

Blues
Actually Blues, your are pretty much correct with your opinion. Harley, like most American companies today simply answer to wall street. H.D. says, you are part of the family, well, bullshit, they just want your money. Of course the *** bike builders are the same, they just have a more reliable product because they are not using 1903 technology!
All that being said, I would not trade my Harleys for any *** bike on the market.
Just Sayin.... lets keep it all in perspective.... Manufacturers are all about the money, bottom line. They incorporate defects in their lousy build process and would like to invoice you for the mishap.
I have worked for a Caterpillar Tractor Dealer for 28 years, and trust me, Caterpillar shoves their problems up the dealers and customers ass every chance they get.
Now Harley has the CEO of Cummins Inc. on thier board of directors...I bet he can show H.D. how to screw the customers.

I agree 100%. The crank issues on the new bikes are inexcusable. I will never buy another new Harley. Never.

Sorry you are having problems
I waited 34 yrs of my life since my 1969 XLCH (AMF) to buy another Harley.
Now in those years Harley realy had real problems.
In 1971 when I owned my first Harley (used)and my last for 32 yrs, due to yearly topends overhauls and all the other problems I had back then. ( I remember my 1st trip out of town, with 3200 miles the rear Valve spring broke and had to haul it back.....) then have the heads/valves/ & springs redone. Dealership was 6 weeks behind service so thats when I learned how to tear it down myself... but I still loved the bike and didnt think about dumping it at that time,
I keep it 3 years, I enjoyed working on it, the 2 yr tore it down, custom paint and chromed a lot of parts and made it a chopper and then sold it the next yr, got married.
Metrics in the next 20 yrs, broke my back. Quit ridding for 11, then last year got a new 07 FLSTC.
I ve put 14K on this bike in 16 months, more than any of the last 6 Ive had and we ride 2 up 95% of the time compared to 5% on the others.
The new 07 Harley is the BEST and trouble free bike I have ever owned;
It is still stock only stage 1 and pipes, but we ride it easy. The wife beats the sh!! out of my back if I get too fast!!
If you or your friends have had engine work or even left it stock and then run the Pi$$ out of them like I did in my younger days and some of my friends still do. Then one would expect problems.
I do agree if it there is a warrenty issues MoCo should fix any and all. Or face loss of sales.
The most Ive read so far on the 96's is the heat issue, which stage 1 and syn oil took care of. Now I am reading about crank run out. I am not a motor guru like others in this forum but I also have read not to go wild with hp and tq without doing bottom end work, for that reason I will probably not do very much work on the engine hopefully till it time to do top end, again hopefully many miles from now....

I have no faith in the new Harleys and have no desire to have one. My 2000 E/G carbed bike will do me just fine. I ordered the new style hydralic cam chain tensioner last week and iI nstalled the HB 125 primary tensioner this week. I will upgrade any part I can without supporting H.D. if I don't have to. One reason I have a Harley though is because of the simple technoligy and my abilty to wrench it.

Hats off to ya Blues, you're a stand-up guy.
I don't disagree with a thing said re HD lack of quality or concern. The Moco is getting into building throw-away, gimicky-style-over-function bikes and I don't see myself buying a new one.
I'll be keeping and rebuilding mine as-needed. My next one may be an 02 HD, or a new something else. Prolly the latter.

He didn't say anything wrong in my opinion!!!! It's true HD gets away with the defective
crank. But like someone said ,in a previous thread ,you know what your getting yourself into when you buy a HD.Just take it to the Indy ,and get a good rock solid bottom end built , along with a better breathing top end, then beat the piss out of it!!!!!

I'm just kind of curious here, what do you think the dealership would do if I brought it in and told them I wanted my crank run out checked because it's starting to vibrate more than what I think is normal? Would they just tell you to go away until something breaks or would they have a look? I know all dealerships are different and checking it isn't quick and painless...Just curious.
We'll check but if it's within tolerance how would you like to pay, cash, check, credit card?"

I'd think if You are lucky an HD tech may take it for a 'test ride' only to come back & tell you it feels NORMAL........

Blues, sorry to hear about your Mother, I wish her the best of luck.
May I suggest a little research on Harley history?
Checkout the release of the knucklehead and what a clusterfukk that was.
The release of every new engine type has had it's share of problems, nothing new there.
As far as an apology, well, I'm sure most of us have posted a thread or two we've regretted.
Drinks are on me, Blues!
