The way I was taught, a light tan indicates there is a little fuel left unburnt, which pre-emmissions was a good thing. It meant there was enough fuel to produce as much power as possible. A white plug means all the fuel is being burnt, you just want to make sure there are no dark specks which could be little pieces of your piston melting off and adhearing to the plug.
