Question Knock Knock

Help! I have an 08 FLHTCU with 8500 miles. I have been using Amsoil since 1000 mile check. Oil pressure around 42-45 when hot and going down the road, 20 when at idle. When I accelerate and back off to shift, at the point of back off, I am hearing a knocking or rattling (reminds me of piston slap noise) noise. It has been getting progressively worse. Noise all but goes away if I have been riding for over 30 minutes. Dealer said normal? Any ideas?

Interesting, I've been having same noise randomly. I've also used Amsoil since first oil change, although I'm not sure it's oil related. Let me know what you find out. I was going to go back to the dealer just to have him listen for this sound. bugs the heck out of me on a new bike.

Well I went to the dealer yesterday and of course it wasn't making the noise while I was there. He said may make a noise for no more than 30 seconds when first starting cold due to cam shoes in primary being dry from sitting. I told him that it lasts longer than that time and was told this is not normal. I'll have to pay more attention to when it happens and what length of time.

I did wind up getting the newer download to ride the occasional high rpm problem. It would cause an error code that would cause the engine light to come back on after starting and then go off again. he said a newer download will be available when the 09's come out in a few weeks.

Mine is similar... now has 10K and also has had Amsoil since new.

Noisy until at operating temp... So I normally start up and let it get to heads warm-hot to touch.

Then it seems OK...

I'm scheduled for 10K service in 2 weeks and it's on the "take a look at" list

Compenstator nut loose maybe? I don't have a 96 but it came loose on my 04/88 and made a knocking noise at lower rpms.

I have an '07 and around 9,000 miles it started doing the same thing. If I stop for a while (meal stop) when taking off I run it up to 3,000 RPM then let off to shift and I hear a rattling chain sound (very loud). After about a minute of riding all is fine. When cold it will do this for about 5 minutes of riding. I too use Amsoil. Of course, by the time I get to the dealer (an hour) it won't do it unless it sits for about 30 minutes and of course they don't have the time to wait for that. I have noticed no change in the way way it runs - it has always run great. I'm thinking perhaps the new hydraulic cam chain tensioners are sticking until it gets hot?

knock knock follow-up

Thanks for all the feedback. Brought it to another dealer today. The dealer's first thought was a lifter loosing it's prime. Once pumped up it goes away. I have noticed that it is more prevalent after a long ride(rode 150 miles Saturday in 90 degree heat) then shut down over night. Noise goes away (or at least is quieter) after engine is hot. Will let you know what this dealer says....BTW- just put on a Baker +One oil pan and have seen a 15-20 degree drop in oil temp!! I could not believe the difference in quality over my stock pan!

I had it done by a local bike shop...don't really know. He did say there were zero clearance issues. I am still amazed at the difference when you hold them side by side!

I have exactly the same problem. Startup at cold and it rattles from low RPM until 3000. As it starts warming up it starts to quiet down. Also the same after a long ride and stop for 30 minutes, it starts to rattle again until it warms up (usually around 2 minutes). I have 10,000 Miles also and am also worried what the hell is going on. Is it a lifter failure? Have you had the dealer look at it with any solutions?

I would like to put my 2007 on the "Me Too" list.

I use Mobil 1 Motorcycle oil in all three holes.

Have you had the dealer look at it? It is still under warranty. Mine is just out of warrantly by 4 months. it is a 2006 TC88 Road Glide. I can not think this is a normal issue. Someone must know or have a dealer pin point the cause, (Lifter, cam tensioner, primary cam tensioner etc... ).

There is so many noises going on in a Harley engine, I have given in to just riding it, and when a rod is hanging out the side of the block, that's when I will say, "that must be a real honest to goodness noise I heard."
