I hear you. I know they can be a bit noisey but when they start knocking, this can't be normal. I will try to get it checked at a dealer again and see what they say. I just wanted to see if anyone else had it checked and what the dealer said needs to be done. I do long road trips and the las thing I need is for it to break down when I had a chance to fix it and did not. if you know what I mean.

Your best bet is to find an indy to diagnose the problem. (It's normal) is not in their vocabulary. Then go to the dealer with facts.

I had a real knock and for a year and a half, I couldn't, and Indy shops could'nt find the problem. I finally gave the bike to a Mech, that works out of his Garage and told him to start tearing down until you find the problem. Turned out it was a bad rod/crank. A small piece of gasket material partially blocked the oil hole in the cam plate that feeds the crank. Ordered a new crank from harley and now I'm getting all the noises y'all are getting. Must be the new cranks-Al

Knock Knock follow up
Took it to another dealer. They said they could not hear it. When I picked up the bike (just before closing) I fired it up and held the throttle around 2800-3000 rpm and the mech heard it and said they did not do that when they checked it and acknowledged the noise. I will be bringing it back again on day after a long ride and let them check it again. These dealers sure do test your patience don't they? BTW - I have contacted the MOTOCO and had a case number assigned in case I have a catastrophic failure sometime down the rode!

Well, at 10,700 the dealer tech heard it... but the day was nearing an end and I had to get home...
I also got the recall notice for the fuel filter shell, so I'll be back shortly for that... so they can check at the same time. Tech also observed a rattle which I thought was from the IDS... he said it wasnt... so we'll look into that at the next major service... he said it sounded like the primary tensioner was misbehaving...
... As long as it doesnt blow up between now and then... hehe

I'm hearing the same rattling noise on my 07 Street Glide. Mine is almost all the time though - hot or cold. It seems like it's especially noticable when RPM's are low while cruising. I just bought the bike two weeks ago with 7,700 miles, so I am a bit worried. My warranty expires in one week. I just called the dealer and am bringing it in this afternoon. I will post any results I get. At least I'll have a case filed before my warranty expires.

I just got back from the dealer. On the way there I did some experimenting and found the rattling to be most noticable at about 1800 RPM's with a slight crack of the throttle (basically cruising at about 45 MPH in 5th gear).
Service manager rode it around for a while. He came back and said he heard it. He asked if I had a Power Commander to which I said yes. He said it's a normal sound from the valvetrain. He said mine actually makes less noise than others. I asked if there were any lubrication issues causing it, and he said nope. It's a normal sound and not to worry about it any more.
Well, there's one assessment anyway.

Just got mine back from the Dealer, mine has the low end rumble when I back off ever so slightly on the throttle, sounds like a loose converter or cracked spring plate in a car. This started to be noticeable a couple of weeks ago, Louder when hot.
The dealer had it 3 days and over 100 miles of road testing, my guess is by everyone in the place, they said " nothing to worry about it's under guarantee".

Mine wound up being the automatic primary chain tensioner... it would maintain tension under "normal" conditions...
I guess I'm abnormal....

I know I will get hounded about this post because there are alot of amsoil lovers here but try loseing that stuff and see if your noise leaves I use to be a amsoil dealer and am currently a indy shop ower and have personally had 6 amsoil related failures noone at amsoil would ever stand behind me but the last straw was one of my 95" motors with about 25,000 amsoil mile wiped the cams and lifters out and trust me I have never seen anyother like it and have alot of big motors out with way more miles than that it just addes up to me and that is just one of many failures I have had. Sorry amsoil it is ust what I have personally seen

Can you attribute the failure to the use of AMSOIL, or is just the oil he was using at the time of engine failure?
My good buddy had 77K + before cam bearing failure using AMSOIL... and never serviced the tensioners either.... and he rides it like he stole it.
My Fatboy went 55K, and It went in because there was nothing left on the cam tensioners (you could audibly hear the chain)
Both bikes came home from the dealer and got oils swapped from day one.

Add me to the rattling engine club. Mine ('07 FLHTC) does exactly the same thing - after sitting for awhile it will rattle like it is going to grenade itself around 3,000 RPM. After a few runs through the gears it is quiet (for a Harley). Friend of mine asked if they used forged pistons since it sounded like piston slap to him. Don't know but if so forged pistons do take a longer time to expand which would explain the rattle until you run it up a few times. I'm going to change the Amsoil out to regular dino 20-50 and see what happens. My 2000 RK made a similiar noise for a long time. Changed the oil out, ran a few thousand miles then went back to synthetic and all was fine. Go figure.
