Thanks
Thanks all for your input - I now think the CR will be 9.2 with stock cams, talked to Andrews and they have a new cam (54H) for 103 engines with a CR less than 10.0, supposed to be strong to 5600, and with my light Dyna should really haul butt. Will end up costing me less than a grand. ( got the 103 for $400 new from dealer)

This bike pulls like an animal from low to midrange. Falls off after about 5000rpm, right where I rarely take this engine. It's bagger, I just ride the thing and when I pass I want it to get going. And I did it without spending lots of money.
Let me know what you think, and as I said; if I were to do it again I'd put in the compression releases.

Arealinvestor, I think a lot of us try to find the happy medium between cost and engine size. I know I'm not rich and I may have to compromise some when I do my build this winter. I've noticed that ceraaa42 has said in more than one post that he was happy with his build and he didn't spend a fortune getting the results that his dyno sheet supports.
What build are you going too? What bike are you buying? These are all things that ceraaa42 already has figured out and has given his input in this thread based on owning the SE 103 kit.

.I agree we must sacrifice somewhat due to money constraints.

There is a boost with bigger flattops, even if the piston has the same negative deck height. With a piston with the proper deck height and an .030 gasket, you are getting close to 9.5:1 on a 96 to 103 conversion, maybe 9.6:1. It all depends on the combustion volume, some of the 96 engine heads have much more volume than their big brothers, the 88in heads. The only sure way is to do the math, and that means measuring and CCing to be sure.
As far as just bolting on some heads and a cam, you could get lucky. Remember that what Andrews says and what is said here is a little different. A little difference in compression(lower) isn't always bad, sometimes it will tune just as well or better. You have to take the advnace out of most high comp builds anyway(that is de-tuning)

I wasn't trying to get into one either, but remember there are a lot of people that read these threads other than us.
You were making leading statements about poor low to midrange power problems with the 103/SE255 cam build as thats where you wanted your power. This is not the case with this kit, it builds low crossing 100tq at about 2500rpm. It starts to fall off about 4500, then goes down at 5000rpm. At little early forsure and I've built engines that didn't start to fall until about 5500rpm. But they were over $3000 more including the tune. This one, about $1200. Plus labor in all cases if you can't do your own.
I'd be interested to know, have you already done a build or planning one? Just courious is all. I'm alway interested in what other have done since it's a good learning chance.
Good luck,
Chris

If you don't mind if I ask, what's your plan with what you've got to work with. I can assure you I've spent a ton of money in the learning process, and it might be fun to help someone not make the mistakes I've made. Actions from the wife, IYKWIM. LOL
Can you do the work yourself? I'm sure you know this would save a huge amount of money. It's always the balancing act to find the power you want at what you have to spend. I usually take the top amount, then figure another 20% above that. There always is more that comes up. Like when I did my 06 EG, tore it down, there is was, new oil pump needed. I think the Feuling was about $375 that I didn't figure in.
What kind of bike?
Chris
