Derby and Timing cover
Hey all, I'm new to Harleys but not new to turning a wrench. I was curious if I need to drain the oil from the primary and the engine to replace the Derby and Timing covers.

Timing cover is just a cosmetic affectation these days, there's nothing behind it. You won't have to drain the oil for the derby cover either...

The bike is a 2008 fat bob; the derby cover I bought said that I had to use a gasket which I bought as well.

BMoscato,
I was told by the dealership that in order to change the Derby cover, have someone lean the bike in the opposite of the side that the derby cover is located, slightly enough for the oil level to move away from behind the cover. They said to buy the gasket, change out the old gasket and replace the Derby cover with one of your choice. I have an 08 SG. I have not done it yet, but they said its no big deal. Could be different since mine id an 08????

Hey GMan,
My bike is an 08; I think I stated somewhere above that it is a 2008 fat Bob. But thanks for the info, I will do it before the week is over.

The '08 will have a gasket. You just need to put a block of wood under the jiffy stand to get the bike to stand almost upright, A piece of 2x4 works fine. Just remember that when its standing upright like that its not as stable as you're use to. Good luck.

Both the timing and derby covers are on. Thanks Pirate, the 2X4 worked great.
For anyone putting on the Willie G. Skull Collection accessories, both the stock and after market derby cover are a T27 torx (don't use a T25) and the stock timing cover is T20 but the replacement was T15.

Derby and Timing Cover......
Thanks for the info. I was going to try and to it myself......but I think I'll let the dealer do it for me. I dont have the tools and derby deal sounds tricky. Being a gal, I dont think I want to attempt the derby all by myself. The Timing Cover I could probably do, but not the Derby from your description of what's involved

Hey lwos,
The whole process took me less then 10 minutes; it's not tricky at all. You can buy a set of Torx sockets for under 20 bucks and use anything to put under the stand to make the bike sit a little more upright (a 2X4 worked great as Pirate pointed out).

Maybe..........
I'll have to look at it again. Just had both the front and rear end lowered so the bike leans over even more when on the kick stand.
I was more concerned with the gasket replacement on the derby cover. The timimg I know I can do.....but I dont want to screw anything up doing the derby........and if there is one thing most women have a tendancy to do, is screw things up especially if it's mechanical in nature. I'll have to ponder more about doing the derby .......but thanks for the input

I planned on doing both myself, but I came up on my 1K service pretty quick so I just had the dealer do the derby since they were changing out all the fluids anyway. They didn't even charge me for it. I provided all my oils to them for the service so I just popped over to parts, got the derby and gasket, and asked them to change it out when they drained the primary.

BMoscato, are you saying that there was no issue with the timing cover? No fluid drainage? I already have the derby cover changed out. But was looking to do the timing cover myself, but not wanting to lose any fluid.
Thanks
