What caused you to check the runout? Were you having problems? Or, were you changing cams or something? What are you going to do with it?

I need some schoolin. Why would the same crank that has .004" in a truing stand, also have .010" while it is installed?
Is this all about where the run out is measured? What am I missing?

This is what it says on TT324.
• Measurements taken on a crankshaft while in the crankcase are used to
determine if further action or inspection are required
Specifications will be higher when measured in the crankcases than in a truing stand
due to bearing run-out, stack-ups, and shaft length / distance from the bearing races.

if cases align properly, and bearing races align properly, there should be NO difference. we used to line lap cases upon motor build, now this is not done.

Fair 'nuff. Thanks, I'd never have imagined the cases would conribute to the problem. Live and learn.

I guess if I was within tollerance while the crank is installed I'd skip the line lap anyway but... How much would a line lap add to the cost of a build? (this sounds like a similar job as a line bore on a car engine, correct?)

your thinking is correct, but the cases are made differently now. if you go with timken on both sides-------then you can lap.

Harley paid to install a brand new engine. At the time the engine blew it was built to a 103 inch with redshift 577 cams, thundermax auto tune ecm and a thunderheader 2 into 1 exhaust. I had the kit reinstalled on my new engine.

I went to the NHTSA SIGHT and could not find one complaint about crank shafts for any 07 to 09 FHL models. Lots of compaints and recalls for the breaks and fuel canister. some heat complaints but no crank issues reported.
