2007 96/96-b Cam Failure
A local HD Dealer-PHD informed me that the 2007 96 / 96-B cams are "junk" and should be replaced immediately.
He said the cams on all 2007 models with 2007 OEM cams and 2007 hydraulic chain drive are not solid billett cams. He said 2007 cams are made with solid shafts and pressed-in cam lobes !
He said he opened up his personal 2007 FL 96 CID and found that one of the cam lobes was "Off" and had started to lossen.
He said all 2007 cams have hydraulic pressed-in lobes and must be removed from all 2007s before they "Grenade The Motor".
If this 2007 cam issue is real, do 2007 cams need to come out now ?
Are the 2007 HD factory installed cams junk ?
What about 2007 Screaming Eagle cams (2007 SE-251), are they solid billett grinds ?
Could this be an isolated occurance ?
Could this be a California (EPA) cam issue ?

All of the SE cams are solid billit cams manufactured by Comp Cams. Wood Performance and Andrews report no problems with solid billit cams used in the new non-bearing outer cam support plates. As for the stock cams coming apart? This is the first I have heard of that.

There isa HD Tech tip out there that touches on the subject of cams briefly. Headline is running issues with the 2007 models and potential causes.

I reckon there's a lot of crap talked about the 2007s. Just yesterday there was a post on Preacher's TC88 list from a guy with over 100k on his 2007 TC96, SE 204 cams in there since 30-40K and no perceptible wear on them.....
Cheers

IF - and I do mean IF
There are any legs to this assertion, you can bet the moco would do a crapload to bury and quietly ignore it over the next couple years.
Could you imagine the parts/labor costs of re-caming all the b motors from 07' ??
That's a potential problem that would NEVER make it to recall level . . .

The stock cams are pressed together. Have not heard of one failure yet. The lobe pressing is not new and has been used before sucessfully by OEMS. That said I don't know if this is bad or not. Time will tell. The SE cams are solid however.

They changed out bearings on the early TCs, it is the labor that costs. They should also change out to the rubber mounted sprocket. I would also be concerned with the camplate having no bearings or bushings.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but I would be aware of a potential problem and check them when servicing.

There was one failure reported on another forum where the cam parts separated, but that's the only one I've heard about.

Let's see...H-D sells over 300k motorcycles a year...and now we have one unofficial report of a cam failure. I like those odds. H-D also has a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty. Pretty damn good. H-D is in business to make money for their stockholders. This isn't a Ma & Pa company. Reliability is key.
