HD Cooler and oil temp gauge installed
Well, I've got the oil cooler installed along with the HD temp gauge. Not a difficult install for either, just a little tight inside the fairing, but made relatively easy by unplugging the harness and moving it out of the way.
I used the power connector for the worthless air temp gauge as the new gauge’s power lead and grounded the harness at the clip bolt just forward of the roll-off switch for the cruise control. The temp sensor is in the oil pan per the directions on this forum, and it works great.
It took the oil temp gauge about 20 minutes of city riding in this morning's 35 degree clear air to get to 180 degrees, and that's pretty much where it stayed.
So far, I'm really please with this set up. I learned a couple of things:
Don't even try to put the oil temp sensor in the oil cooler lines, as outlined in HD's instructions. Makes no sense at all. Installing in the oil pan is the way to go. You got plenty of wire - use it.
Get a few feet of aftermarket 1/8" ID high-pressure petro hose from AutoZone in case you foul up the pre-formed hoses. The AZ hose works just fine, if not better than the preformed hose in the kit.
The oil cooler's fit is just too freaking tight with the chrome regulator cover, so the cover is no more. Don’t recall any word from MOCO stating the cooler will not fit with the regulator cover.
Instead of running down the Snap On guy for a a 7/16" hex 3/8" or 1/2" drive , I used a 7/16" bolt with two 7/16" nuts as an adapter to torque in the oil filter fitting for the oil cooler adapter back plate. Worked great.
Install the cooler mounting plate on the frame first, and then install the cooler on the bracket. Can't remember if the directions said to do this; hell I don't read them most of the time anyway.
