Harley engineering drop the ball on 96 cu./in. motor?

I believe that harley engineering really dropped the ball on the 96 cu./in. motor.
1. engine high temp. issue 2. weak crank issue 3. low to mid range rpm vibration issue.

I did not have any issues like this with any of the 88 cu./in. motors that I have owned.

Does anyone know why harley went to the 96 cu./in. motor anyway, why mess with something that runs great !

the only thing that the 88's dont have is the over heating issue..

the flywheel is still a piece of crap and cannot take even a mild workload before it fails..

and the 88's have exactly the same vibration issue..

it is not the 96 that is such a big issue..

IT IS HARLEY DAVIDSON..... they make crap...

the majority of the harley now is made in other countries than the USA...

so you are buying just as much forgien crap as if you bought a Honda or a Kawi....

I am nervous, I got a noise on my 07, only when moving , replaced front bearing, and adjusted belt. Sounds like its coming from the primary or tranny. I hope its not a result of the chugging and vibration in the 07, without the IDS.

I always said bad idea to buy first year of something. But I figured they couldn't screw up a 96" and 6 speed.

WR, you have an 08, what vibration are you talking about? I have an 07 without the IDS. I wish I would have bought a 08. 6 gallon tank, shorter then the new ones. Seems the 08 may be a little better on heat then my 07 too.

I hear ya zerk. I get an occassional whine from the primary. I installed the IDS but still think I'm running on borrowed time.

When I got back from AK, the whine was real bad, to the point the bike has been grounded since July. Nice spending 20k on a bike to have it sit. My next step is open the primary and see if I can see anything. Then I am wondering about the tranny bearings. Also not being a profesional, unless its really bad, I may not be able to tell if its bad.

Bike only has 37k on it.

Hey Berserker,
my 08 flhx did not have as much vibration as the 09 fxdl that I now have.
Seems that I have to keep the rpm at least at 2500 to 2600 rpm when driving around town to smooth things out. The only time I think the 96 runs well is from 70 mph. and up.

As far back as I can remember, the best Harley was one that had been torn down and put together correctly with all the bugs taken out. This is still true, and when you get em right, they are awesome.

I only run that low when I am coasting, and want to keep my pipes quite. Other then that you are lugging the hell out of it.

LUGGING !
Why would anyone ride at 2500 rpm ? nothing to be gained.
My 96 behaves well, it is not "warmer" than my 88.
The only thing that might go wrong could be the compensator I guess.
