intermittent charging

Riding home on my 07 Ultra I noticed the volt meter drop and idiot light come on. After a mile or two it started again. Went off and on a couple time then stayed charging until I got home. Is this normal when a regulator goes out or do I have a loose wire?

Nope not a normal function..

hopefully you have a regulator that is going bad.. but sounds more like a stator going out..
the symptoms are exactly as mine were when my stator fried on a trip..

good luck hope it is the regulator...

Make sure the plugs on the bottom of the regulator are in all the way and snapped closed. Also, check to see if the bolts that hold the reg down are tight, as this would cause a ground issue. Loose battery cable can and will cause the same thing.

My 07 RK rotor dropped a magnet and wiped out the stator. Had intermittent warrning lamps. Was a mess, look in the primary through derby for magnet stuck to the hardware. Smelled rank too. Don't mean to freak you out, but that's my story...

I also noticed the key fob thing doesn't seem to want to let the bike start right away. My luck its a computer issue. No wonder I like my old shovel better

Hope that baby is still under warranty, mine did that, fried the stator and regulator. $1200 fix, thankfully a week before warranty ran out...

just did mine.... there is a simple test to see if your charging system is working. Need a tester about 20 bucks. Manual will go over it pretty good for specs. Ground will def cause that too. If you lost a magnet you would hear a clunkity clunk in the primary. Like a blender breaking ice in oil. I bought both reg and stator for 130 and about 20 for the gasket and 5 for the new screws and 5 for the tube of RTV so about 160 to put both new parts in. (less time)

Start with the easy things like the plug at the alternator. You are having the same problems I had with my 2005 Ultra. It turned out to be a bad plug after 20,000 miles.

Had this problem myself a while back - it was the connector for the regulator (the one that is mounted under the regulator). Cleaning, treating and reseating it worked. Worse case, put a slight twist in the pins to ensure positive contact. Of course, the quickest way to check is to squeeze the connector tighter together while idling and see if the headlight brightens or if your voltage climbs up to the 14.7 range.
