Circlips - Removing / Installing

Im going to do a SE 103 stage 2 kit on a 2009 FLHX. I have all the info I need except ...... Ive never been inside one of these engines yet and am wondering what the easiest way to remove the piston pin circlips is? Is there a tool or do you just start digging away with a dental pick?

Thanks ....

Andrew

To remove them, a GOOD dental pick is my tool of choice. No need to dig around though, the pistons have a notch to insert the pick and they pop right out. Cover the holes in the case as you dont want one dropping in!

Great advice on covering the case holes.Had one fall in my last build and with the grace of God recovered it from the bottom with a magnet.

Kent-moore makes a tool for removing them but I have better luck with a pick to remove them and a small screw driver and needle nose pliers to install.

another thing is go to a local shop and ask for an old piston and circlip and practice before you actually do it. It is much easier than it looks. it is also a good idea to practice putting the piston and rings in the cylinder using a junk cylinder etc.

I pmed you a good link for doing the circlips.

That sounds like good advice and not too expensive.

Circlips

Thanks for the info everyone ...... Im gonna give the 3/4 copper coupling and 5/8 socket a try for the install. I guess I can practice (carefully) on the pistons that are coming out of the jugs.
