Exclamation chunking sounds in neutral??? chewing metal

wtf? so it's a bit colder, big deal...

4700kms on a 09 fxstc... babied (mostly)

running synthetic, 94 octane only.

happened three times now: for a split second after starting (with ease), the motor 'chunks'. Idle is fine, no indication of a problem when firing up the motor.

sounds like it's chewing pistons... after about 15 seconds.

only happens in neutral, started two days ago as the weather changed... even happened in a parking lot after riding it a few km to the store (left it idling, ran in for smokes), went to pull away, 'clunk chunk clunk' and then fine.

what gives?

Could be your comensator. They all have a habit of clunking when starting up. They will also clunk when you are pulling out and lug the engine down hard. You may want to start there. I know there is a thread on it. Just search "compensator".

I have an 08 Ultra with 33k miles and just had the compensator replaced. It made a sound like rods knocking.

Yup, compensator. You should consider the SE comp while in there anyway. Stock comps are problematic.

Diggerpine here; Take it in and get it checked out while you can. Your compensator nut may be loose or something is coming apart and contacting your primary chain sprocket. In my case the compensator cover ripped off due to a loose nut and my primary chain jumped a row and my motor was running on one side of my primary chain. Had to get pretty much everything replaced. (Compensator sprocket, cover, primary chain, chain adjuster, stators and rotors) Lucky I had the extended warranty!

Ride Safe!
