There's got to be more to the story. The cables should really not affect the idle. The ECM should be controlling the idle speed via the IAC.

I had a similiar problem and the cables have nothing to do with idle speed ecm controls it. Pull your air filter out make sure its not real dirty and get some throttle body cleaner (not carb cleaner) clean your throttle body very well especially a small hole near the butterfly it fixed my low idle, also make sure and cover anything the cleaner might get on. This may not be your problem but it cant hurt...

If he bottomed the throttle out, HARD, he could have bent something, or affected the IAC. I agree in that the ECU controls the idle speed, but a base idle (mechanical) is set, in conjunction with the ECU. The only other issue that would affect the idle would be the TPS. Are the screws loose or does it look like it's moved at all?

I gotta admit, it sounds strange.

A bunch of whinin' & complainin' should help.

Try cleaning the IAC butterfly with some brake clean. Several threads on this subject.

Well , you should be able to take the cables off and it should still idle. If you brought the idle back through cable adjustemt via butterfly opening you problem still exists. You've just worked around it and fooled the system. Problem is usually the iac motor, connections or just crudded up with carbon in the port.
