clunking and hissing - where to start

Hi guys,
08 Train with a t-max, 2-1 pipes and AN big sucker...

Bike starts up beautifully cold and roars down the road. It gets nice and hot. I turn the bike off, turn on the ignition, wait for the injectors to fire up, then hit the start. Bike either starts up nicely again, or... there's this huge clunking sound, like a baseball bat hitting a big chunk of metal, maybe even two of them, and then a big sharp hiss that comes from somewhere on the right side. I release the start button, then try it again, and then it fires up.

Got no warning lights, no faults on the t-max..

Temperature here is hot and humid as hell, that's the environment the bike is in.

Possible intake leak somewhere?

Thanks for any info.

Sounds like a cat got wound up in the clutch mechanism...

Careful when you extract it, as it sounds like it's pissed.

See this thread.

Consensus is the compensator.

Edit your start timing to about 2 degrees in the 0-256 rpms for starting. This prevents kickback. The hiss sound is nothing more than the engine kicking backwards ,puking the intake charge out the breather. Modify the timing and both will clear up.
