Cam change to reduce heat
09 Soft Tail Deluxe. Bone stock. Bolt in cam to help reduce heat. Wife's bike. She'll appreciate any recommendations....

Add a fuel management system to give it more fuel , or just richen the EPA MAP and it'll cool down just fine. You'll loose a few degrees with synthetic oil and an oil cooler too, if ya want to go that route.
Changing a cam to loose temps is like Dolly Parton wearing baggy tee-shirts to make herself look more flat chested.

Changing the cam and adding a fuel mangement system will make the bike run cooler per stroke, It will also make the bike produce more power which will increase heat produced. Bottom line, when sitting at a light it might be cooler for the first 30 seconds after that its just as hot as before. I got a head temperature gauge on mine and watch the temperature all the time and see it first hand! So add those items for a better running machine and you will get a small decrease in heat but these are air cooled engines, the heat is always going to be there!!

the overlap is what your looking for.
30 deg or more
without some overlap (intake and exhaust open at the same time) it will never really run any cooler. added fuel helps but isn't enough to do it right!
or as paul said the headquarters should be a good cam desinged for the 08-09's

96 inchers love the 26 it will cool it down and add the tts tuner done deal. The 37 54 work as well however with the rather low compression they tend to move the tq up further than so like it. The 26 has done great with well over 2 dozen installs that we have done. Just completed one with true dual pipes. makes very usable tq even with the poor pipes the customer had installed prior to use adding the cam.

yeah, i use the venerable 26 to overcome the shortcomings of true duals also. its a shame though, it is a great cam to be killed by pipes. ever thrown a set of 26's in a 96 with stock exhaust? makes ya slap yo momma!
