Primary and tranny oil for '09...

OK, the MoCo threw me a curve. I just got used to the idea of using the same oil in all three holes and now I have to use the H-D Primary Chaincase/Tranny Lube in my '09.

What are you all using in primary and tranny in your '09s?

oils

For lubricants, use any that meet the specs set up for warranty, till you are off. At least that is what I would do if I were depending on Moco for warranty. After that, I would look into a properly rated gear oil for the trans,(which will probably meet spec now-check amzoil?).
For the primary chain case and clutch, I am going to switch to synthetic transmission fluid Dexeron II i believe is what works well. Better check on that last one though, I am not sure if II or III is correct.

Faast Ed is an unknown quantity at this point
I have experimented a lot over the years. Tried a lot of stuff.
My conclusions:

Engine: Any quality synthetic,.... 20/50w will do (straight wt 50 or 60 during super hot months).

Primary: I've tried all the ones spoken about on message boards.
Redliine MTL my absolute favorite! Smoothest shifting of any I have ever tried.

Trans: Redline Shockproof Heavy. There are other good choices available here, but I like my Shockproof.

The "same in all three holes" is a very bad option and you should be glad someone is swaying you away from that. Some areas need thin and some need thick.

As Ed mentioned. Choose the oil for the purpose at hand. Engine oil for the engine, a primary oil that provides good clutch function and a gear oil for the gear box. Each is specialized to work best for it's intended purpose. While for example Syn3 may work in all three, it's just wrong. Seems that even MoCo has finally clued in to that. They are a little slow.

My plan for my first change is to go with what I have been doing. Amsoil syn in the motor, ATF in the primary and their gear blend for the tranny. Good thing about it all, if one of them runs low, I can top it off with the quart of syn I carry in my saddlebag......

From another post:

"Syn 3 in the primary will work OK, but there are better choices available. I've used many 20W-50 synthetic motor oils that are JASO MA certified and have never had any clutch slippage, but I did start to experience a "grabbiness" feeling in the clutch action. I switched to Bel-Ray 80W Gear Saver Transmission Oil which is also their "Primary Chaincase Lube" and will never go back to using motor oil in my primary again. The Bel Ray product is great and my clutch action is smooth as silk!"

PS, I've also used 20W-50 motor oil, 75W-90 gear oil, RL Shockproof Heavy in the transmission and my favorite that I'm now using is Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-110.

You should capitalize on the Harley advantage which allows you to use specialty lubricants for specific applications rather than 1 general lubricant for 3 different purposes...
