Rear Cylinder

I had been apprehensive about this post but what the hell….
Was there a model or year HD where the rear cylinder would
shut down the spark if it reached a critical temperature? Someone
keeps telling me second hand stories about this feature.

2007 and up (I believe). It's called "Parade Mode". Rear cylinder stops firing, mixture is richened as ECU goes in to open loop, idle drops to 950 from 1150. 2007-2008 it was temp controlled where as 2009, the rider can turn it off and on.

Not sure, but I believe it's only touring models....

On my 2008 Ultra, the feature can be disabled via a SEST. According to the manual, it's mainly a rider/passenger comfort feature so people roast less at a stoplight or in heavy traffic.

On the '09s you can enablde/disable the feature by pushing the throttle forward while the ignition is in the on position. The cuise control light blinks when it's set.

It kicks on all the time when I'm at a red light. You can hear and feel the engine cadence change once your bike turns into a "thumper." Straddling a running engine will make you feel the heat, rear cylinder or not.

I'm pretty sure it is only on the fly-by-wire '07 and up touring models. My '09 FXD doesn't have it. It would be nice to have for those times you get stuck in traffic on a really hot day.

07's are not fly by wire. The heat management feature in that year could be activated or deactivated by the dealer.

Actually my 06 Fl had this, but only by software could you enable or disable it.

My 06 FLHX has a section in the manual about it so I'm guessing it has it.

20538 will become famous soon enough
I have a 08 FLHX and stock ECM from factory did NOT have it. I had an updated flash to the ECM that fixed the high idle problem I was having and they asked if I wanted the parade mode enabled. I declined and was told there'd be a new update when the 09's came out. I haven't had them do the new download yet and may not. The 09's came with the parade mode enabled from the factory, I think but am not sure.

I see no reason not to enable the engine temp management system. I have had mine shut down the rear cylinder 2-3 times. As soon as you give it some gas it fires the rear again. Except for the lower idle speed and a little more lope to the engine you don't know it has happened. I found this past weekend at the Gettysburg bike rally that if I turned my fan on before the rear cylinder dropped out, that it would cool the motor enough to not go into that mode. Found this while riding through all the bikes and stop lights in the town. With the fan I have the added benefit of having a very warm right leg!

This feature is standard on the FLHTCUTG TriGlide with the 103 engine. Apparently, Harley has been pushing the envelope for air cooled engines and this is a means of upping the displacement before resorting to water-cooled.
